    Show us your UHF!

    Hi Guys

Trying to save a bit of cash and not buy an outback roof console.. and making one by the time i have sourced switches lights etc etc etc it will probably about the same cost.. so...

Has anyone mounted their UHF under the stereo spot? I have an icom 400 pro to go in there and i reckon i could mount it to the steel plate behind that area. The only issue is that i have to cut a hole in the dash panel and to buy it is a couple of hundred dollars....and if i screw it up... well you know.

Out of interest has anyone seen a 1.5 din facia for the defender as it looks like it could take one? My other option is make an ally plate up to fit the stereo fascia and squeeze the stereo and uhf there, may look a little 'rustic' tho..

    Any pics would be appreciated!

I purchased the icom 440 so that the unit is mounted behind dash where hand break is. I can't see you getting the 400 pro in there

    In this position?

The radio unit is under the crash pad, the inside of the dash on my car is getting a bit crowded.

Excuse the dust - not long back from hols and things haven't been cleaned thoroughly.

    Thanks guys.

Pc3 yeah I can't get it anywhere under the dash hence a roof console or me asking silly questions on here

Bundalene that's the position. Looks like your radio is a bit smaller than the icom. Other thing I worry about is the heat but I guess it will be better in there than a roof console. What is yours attached to? I wish they did a kit like my boat radio that makes it panel mount. Much easier that way!

    Thanks both

The section you see is just the head. The radio itself is tucked in above this whole panel ant to the right and I put in a weather shield so it can't get wet through the flap vents from the front.

The speaker is in the main section of the radio itself and comes through loud and clear. I considered putting in an external speaker, but there was no need.

I don't have any more pics at this stage.

I know you mentioned not wanting to fork out for a roof console, but just to muddy the decision below is a picture of my 200tDi with one fitted.

I've found it one of the best accessories I've fitted over the years. Not only for somewhere to mount my radios, but also for extra storage and more importantly lighting inside of the vehicle - I can now find stuff at night!

I'll try and grab a picture of it later, but mine is screwed into the cubby box, between the box and the seat. It works really well, isn't in the way of the seat going backwards and forwards and is easy and safe to adjust while driving.
