You never know what comes up and where. I browse all the ones (auctioneers) I know of and am keen to find more.

So it looks like a TDi between '95 & 2000 in the high teens to mid twenties. Unless you are lucky enough to come a across a cheap TD5? Looks like I'll have to save up a few more bucks.
    - Is there a big difference between the TD5 & the TDi?
    - Are all models the same mechanically in this range?
There isn't a whole lot of difference between the Tdi and the TD5. The biggest is obviously the engine. The TD5 was the first electronically controlled diesel. It runs 90 kW and 300Nm as opposed to the Tdi's 83 kW and 265Nm. Fuel comsumption is almost exactly the same. The TD5 can be chipped up to 140 kW which makes a massive difference. The Tdi's biggest issue isn't peak power/torque but what it makes low down but this is easily fixed with some injector pump tweaking. Even if you are only slightly mechanically minded it's easy to do, and far cheaper than chipping the TD5. Both have the R380 gearbox and LT230 transfer case.

Downsides to a TD5 - higher registration because it's a 5 cylinder, and if you break down in the middle of nowhere the Tdi can be fixed MacGyver style with a ballpoint pen and a paperclip.

Apart from some changes to the dash, there's not a whole lot else that seperates them (someone please do tell if I've missed something).
