Canopy with pop-top for 130 dual cab

Hi All, First post, so go easy.

Currently have a 75 Series Landcruiser Pop-top Camper which has to go as we've just had our first child (only seats 2).

Currently investigating options - and pretty much heart set on 130 Dual Cab with integrated canopy and either a roof-top tent, or canopy including pop-top (pref due to set up ease and hard roof).

In terms of pop-top, the standard length of the tray would be insufficient length for the bed, and as a 6ft tall overweight bloke, I cant be skimping on bed size. Need 2000mm in length. Spoke to bloke at Metal Form Industries in Warragul today (very helpful) and he confirmed they could make a canopy with an 'overhang' section toward front of vehicle. Section above rear cab would need clearance from roof of cab (say 50mm) and then at least 250mm height for the 'bed'. Came home tonight and measured garage height which was 2200mm - so now looking for alternatives to keep height below 2200mm.

Q. Could the overhang be at the rear? Height of canopy could then be kept at roof height. Not much weight involved hanging over back, but there may be legal or other considerations?

Q. What is the standard (ie. length of regular tub) and maximum lengths of a canopy (if different)? The Landrover website states under dimensions for Crew Cab Chassis a maximum box length of 1640mm. Is that it?

Q. Could the rear panel of the canopy be angled 'out' (so botton of canopy is 1640mm and top is 2000mm)?

Any other ideas/suggestions? If anyone has a similar set-up I'd be grateful to see photos.

Welcome to AULRO Tim, I have a 130, the inside measurement of the factory tub is 1700mm, which is comfotable to sleep in with the tailgate down, (I am 6'3" and overweight also). Someone on the forum, (can't remember name) has a tray fitted with a slide on camper that is 2100mm. Mulgo on this site runs a business in Sydney, converting Land Rovers into Poptops, Mulgos own vehicle is a 130 which he converted to a wagon with a poptop, it sleeps 4 I think. Ho Hars on this site have built a slide on poptop camper with the bed extending over the cab area. I hope this information is of some help to you.

Tim I have a 2.20 metre tray on my 130 dual cab, this is what attracted me to the PUMA 130's over the Japanese Twin Cabs. One peron on here has 2.4 metre tray on ther 130 twin cab...............I cant help with the other questions but I think with a tray that long you could acheive what you needed too ?

Our 130 below sits at 2300, with about 10mm gap on the garage, so theres no way you could put a tent on there and fit in a standard garage....

If you have a tray then you will get a lower height with what ever camper/body you put on there. The pics below give you a idea of the cab over hang with a slide on camper for a HCPU defender. I would think that in order to stay below the roof line, you would have to have a special canopy made for a HCPU, if its for a tray theres a few products already out there,

there was a nice green 130cc on the Outback heritage drive, that had a box type camper with a roof tent built into it, very good set up....

Believe the 130 is the best touring vehicle for a family, enough room, endless possibilities to set up, etc.

Here is our 130 station wagon with pop top, sleeps 4 easily. Internal access from the front to the rear.
Without roof rack it sits 1600mm higher than standard.

Currently building two more of those, one is a MY2010 and the other MY1996.

Similar could be built with the wider rear section (200mm) and the back tapered up with wider rear door.

Thanks for the replies - I've found a photo that might help (picture tells a thousand words and all).

I'm looking to have a canopy made up like this, but rather than having a 'tent' on top, to have a hard pop-top which is hinged at the front. Idea would be to keep the canopy height at roof height (ie. below 2.2m) - length would be around 1.7m at base, and 2.0m at roof line.

What do you think?

Anyone done this before? Why not? Any better ideas given my needs?

Hello Tim,

It should be possible to build what you want to achieve. I have however a few questions in regards to the desired setup and measurements.

What is the size of the bed you would like? How many would sleep in that bed? I understand that you are a family of three, does that mean two adults in the pop up roof and the little one in the lower cabin?
Do you want to have access to the bed from the inside or outside?

I am just tossing around a few ideas to help you further. One possible solution could be that instead of sleeping lengthways, you could have both sides of the rear canopy open up and sleep across, with slide out storage underneath.
