It holds the mesh in place, but before we can comment any further you need to count all the other rivets in the car so we know which model you have!

Hello all, I've been trying to locate a water leak on the 'fender, and I think I have found it!
There is a rivet poking out from inside the cabin into the seal and it stops the vent flap from closing completely.
Does anyone else have this rivet, or can someone who has the dash covers removed have a look and see what it holds on before I cut it off?

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

It is easier to rivet through that part.
In the series Landies there were as many as 6 rivets in each side for the vent screens, however in the series the seal is stuck to the firewall face and so the rivets are inside the seal.
Your rivet looks particularly proud, perhaps you can hammer it down a little with a small punch, working it out producing a flat mushroom head dome. Otherwise you need to get into both sides with with a hammer and die.

SubscriberI would die grind it down flush and use a bit of silastic to hold the mesh in place.
But be careful to make sure to open windows every so often, so that you are not asphyxiated by the new airtight nature of the cabin. Or to let the cats out.
