    Puma part availability

Before I begin I must state that I love my Puma, previously owned a TD5 and so far I think the puma is so much better. But..... The TD5 never ever EVER failed to get me home.

My new (and much loved) puma has failed to start a few times. Turn the key, engine fires, coughs and stops. Turn the key again and all is fine. What was that i think? A few days later same thing again. Starts, splutters and stops. Next time i turn the key it starts and runs like a clock.

It's almost at 10K so I think I must have this looked at when I take it in to be serviced.

One morning start the car, cough cough sputter and it stops. Hmmm fuel filter mst be getting blocked I think. Drive to the shop, turn it off, buy my milk, back into the car and turn he key. Cranks and won't start, try again, no go. Ring land rover assist and they send a truck t collect me.

Turns out the engine MCU is dead. Bad news, needs come from the UK so 4 weeks wait they tell me. 4 bloody weeks!!!!! How can a company like LRA not stock enough spare parts to build a complete car, why is a part 4 weeks away?

To their credit LRA said they will provide me with a free loan car ( a Camry) while mine is off the road. I declined the offer in favour of a free first service.

I understand things can break... Love my car and still have confidence in it but LRA should have the parts here to fix any problem, from a broken globe to a new engine MCU.

Oh. After waiting about 30 mins and before the flat top arrived to collect my car I again tried to start the car. Turned the key and it started without incident, so i drove it to the dealer and rang Land Rover Assist to cancel the flat top.

Did I mention the part is 4 bloody weeks away. You count em. Not 1 , not 2, not even 3 but 4 weeks!!!!! I'm glad I don't need this car for my work!!!!

I used to wait 2 weeks for Coaster bus service kits,I waited 3 months for a synchro pack for 2nd gear,I could not buy a D4D starter motor, there was none in the world apparently,6 weeks for an injector and I could not buy a top D4D rad hose in Oz from any supplier anywhere.I've never waited more than a few days for any Tdi,3.9 or Td6 parts. This is exactly the same as my truck. Odd that the part is not held in stock.
Mine has never failed to start, some times it just takes a few tries.
To me it seems like the ECU doesn't recognize the throttle as while it is trying to start there is zero throttle pedal response.
Let me know outcome as I'm still waiting for my new ECU as well!

    No Problems Justin, will do.

I don’t think it sounds like ECU as the thing runs so very well once it has started, and the way it coughs when its started, seems very fuel related – plus it only did it 1 in 100 times I started the engine. To me it seems like it lost fuel pressure when parked and doesn’t pressurise the fuel line quick enough on starts. If it were petrol I would think it was vapour lock. - but hey - what do i know –As long as they fix it.

I rang my Land Rover dealer today just to confirm that it is a 4 week wait for the part - sadly yes. Apparently is snowing in England at the moment so they can’t get flights out (Damn this global warming). And a honourable mention to the quick thinking dealer for such a credible excuse – bet he has used that before..... (Cynic? Me??? Nooo!)

The reason for my frustration is because I had plans for a family camping holiday out back of Licola. I have a brand new Camper trailer, Eco diesel shower, Honda generator and even a portable satellite dish so the kids can watch foxtel when they get boarded at nights. 4 days before the planned departure the ECU dies... The family is really disappointed about it as I don’t get holidays all that often.

    Anyway – c’est la vie

    Will keep you all posted.....

The immobiliser apparently lets the engine start, then cuts it out after a second or so.
I don't know if this is to fool the would-be-thief into thinking there's a problem with the car but that's the way it's supposed to work.

4 weeks from the Uk?????? not sure if they have heard of Air freight, one small company called fedex can get you a package here in 5 days or less, i may be wrong but 4 weeks car hire maybe more expensive than a small packet??

    That fits the symptoms perfectly!!!

Wonder if the alarm is part of the ECU as i know i asked (begged) the dealer to rip all that alarm / immobiliser crap out only when i ordered the car only to be told it that it cant be done. Hmmmm

Mate, I feel your pain. We recently bought a camper, loaded up and ready to go but had to can our holiday because a repair job on the gearbox stretched from 4 days to 4 weeks due to missing parts and delays with customs.
But hey, who wants to go camping in this weather anyway?
