    Puma Gearbox, transfer case rattle when coasting

    Hi All,

    I've got a 2month old Puma 110 and have a slight problem with some transmission noise. It started during a massive traffic jam just after Christmas coming back into Sydney on the Princes Hway when coasting in neutral (because the traffic was crawling along at about 5KMh for hours) on a very slight downhill slope. There would be a clattering noise from about the centre of the vehicle. This also happens sometimes when pulling up to red lights and coasting the last 20 metres or so in neutral.
    It only seems to happen when the engine is at running temp.
    Has anybody had any thing similar happen to them? or any knowledge of what this might be as I'd like to have some knowledge behind me before presenting the problem to the Dealer for warranty work.
    Apart from this, I love the vehicle and can't wait to drive it at every opportunity.

    check the parkbrake and output splines on the rear output shaft.

    Thanks for that quick reply. What should I look for with the splines? wear, damage or manufacturing fault?

    Possibly also oil on the park brake shoes too.

    Mine did that too! Went back 4 times, and they adjusted the handbrake to the point it would almost hit the roof when you put it on, but still sounded like the brake was dragging and catching. Then they loctited the pinion flange on the rear diff, and it's not done it since. (Well I think the handbrake is still catching but because there's no slop in the shaft you can't here it any more...)

    So the final fix was to loctite the diff pinion flange.

    theres about 8 things that you need to check out..

    1. propshaft to flange nuts but you'll be taking those off to check most of the other things, inspect the studs when you take the shaft off off for fretting. (do the same for the diff side)

    2. backing plate contamination near the drum

    3. drum mounting screw

    4. correct torquing and fitment of the nut that holds the flange to the output shaft (this is also the bit that has the splines under it that you need to loctite up and is the same setup as on the rear diff)

    5. out of round on the drum

    6. shoes correctly fitted and clean

    7. shoe pull in springs and contamination of the shoe seats

    8. backing plate mounting bolts

    9. cable security

    10. correct fitting of the anchor blocks to the backing plate.

    as a side a dying UJ can also ring up through the parkbrake and the tcase.


    Im still astounded that a basic parkbrake configuration thats been working fine for more than half a century can all of a sudden be gotten so wrong.

    I would say dragging handbrake
    Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

    Thanks heaps for this detailed reply. I read also in another forum of the possibility of diff lock up, is that a possibility do you think?

    A quote from the other forum:


    This might be obvious but have you shifted the transfer box whilst moving? If so run in low come to standstill clutch, neutral, clutch, high, roll on gently might reset the transfer gearbox wind-up. I had a heavy knocking after a spin in low-range this sorted it and transmission and diffs now silent again.

    its usually got a bunch of other symptoms but yes its possable.

    At this stage Im working off it being the ringing handbrake symptoms because thats cheap easy and checkable at home with not much more than very basic tooling.
