    130 DCPU questions...

    Hey All,
I've decided to get a 130 DCPU as a work truck - thinking around the 2000-2002 era but also interested in what people think of the 300tdi in this rig - obviously they can be had a bit cheaper. I dont do any towing so that wont be an issue - as long as it can sit on 110kph on the highway I'd be happy. I know all about the TD5 issues - had them all (minus dowels) on the disco so that doesnt scare me.

My work takes me all over the place and as this will do some long trips around NSW I'm interested in what others have done to improve the "comfort" on long runs. Are the stock seats OK for long trips? What range does the stock fuel tank give? Does a rear canopy make much difference to the fuel usage, better or worse? I'm looking for one with some "fruit" already but dont want to pay for stuff I dont really need - like a winch or 33in muddies..

It will also be our second car (D2 TD5 is the wifes now) so how "liveable" are they in town?

    Cheers,

    Adam

I have two mates in Kalgoorlie with Tdi 130's as work vehicles and they get the job done. They aren't fast,a PITA to park at woolies but they can carry alot of gear and are really good on the desert trips we used to do.I'd buy the vehicle in the best condition I could find over the choice of motor. I've used mine as my work truck for years.

Ladders on top, 500+kg of tools and gear on board all the time. (tares out at 2660-2750kg most of the time)

The 300Tdi needs a fiddle with the pump to be acceptable on the highway and mountains here, now it's fine and delivers 11.5l/100km consistently with enough poke to blow our empty TD42T Patrol off up the hills.
33" MT's make the the odo and speedo accurate, (most people quoting fuel economy run 7.50/16's or 235/85's so their odo is around 8-10% out)
With the aggressive tyres, bull bar, winch, brush bars and side steps, ladders, tubing and conduit on top I think that's pretty good economy for something that's never driven to save fuel but driven to get from one job to the next (break down service and installations)

The turning circle isn't an issue in the bush where i am, and when in town you do reverse turns and reverse parking everywhere.

Excellent vehicle for remote/rural area work if you need the size/carrying capacity and/or seating capacity and are used to Landy idiosyncrasies and servicing.

So having done the usual searching on the internets it seems like a 300tdi can be had for a fair bit less than a Td5 - makes sense. Other than the donk is there much difference between say a '97 DCPU and a '00 one?

    Cheers,

    Adam
