Used Defenders - what to look for

    Hi guys,

I've had a bit of a search in the forums but haven't quite found what I'm after...

I'm going to buy my first Land Rover Defender 110 this year. Dream Car. I'm ridiculously excited about it....like a kid on Christmas Eve.

I'm fairly familiar with vehicle mechanics, but I'm entirely new to off-roading and 4x4 vehicles and as with any second hand vehicle there are certain things to look out for when viewing and test-driving.

With the Defender 110, what should I be checking and looking out for?
What should I be wary of...

Advice from those with experience is always gratefully appreciated!

    tdi or td5 or Puma?

    300tdi's ranged from 94 - 98

service history is handy, esp when the timing belt was lat changed and have a look at the gearbox main/output shaft

other than that all the mechanicals are pretty straight forward

    Td5 I think Weeds.

Anything of specific concern regarding the output shaft?

pretty sure the problem was fixed for td5's, others my pipe in with a bit more info. there is a gear that slides on a spline, this spline can get worn quite badly...

That's not an issue since about 97/98. certainly all TD5 should have the cross drilled input gear to allow oil in.

Search should bring up a lot of info.

    Some specific TD5 Defender stuff:

Check its got a decent service histroy.
    Check it hasn't been overheated
Buy on condition and history. They are the most important things.

Up to 2002 will have a stronger driveline in the rear than post 2002.

Post 2002 however will have some other improvements.

I would personally go for the latest one you can find. say a 2005/6, if budget allows.

    Thank you PSimpson7.

What would be the best way to go about finding a used Defender?

To date I've been trying carsales.com.au and drive.com.au but I wonder if there are more specific 4x4 clubs or sites I should try?

Yes I agree. As they say Cone. Go to the top of the page and click on markets and take a look in Cars for sale. Make sure you scroll down through the pages. There are some good Defenders in there
