Advice Please
Gday all,
Am looking at a county for someone and it has a 3.5 EFI with a 5 sp box.
My question is What model gearbox would it be?
Also what Deisel will fit into a county., I do know that some had the 3.9 isuzu, but would think them hard to find.. A 300 tdi or similar
Was told its an 89 model..
Many thanks
Cheers Ean

Gearbox is more than likely the LT85 but could be the LT77. I'll defer to greater knowledge on that.
Some background here
Land Rover gearbox history
As for engine transplants a 300Tdi is an obvious candidate if an Isuzu 4bd1 can't be found. More extreme choices include the GMC V8 diesel.
Need to be careful about which transmission to attach it to.
There will be a few ideas along these lines.
Retaining the Rover V8 and putting it on gas shouldn't be ruled out...they sound so sweet.

Box will be an LT85 5-speed. Stronger than an LT77 and about the same strength as a late model R380.
The easiest conversion is a 4BD1(T). They are still commonly available, especially if you use one from a truck. If you have one from a landie you just need the isuzu bellhousing for the LT85.
If I was doing a conversion these days I would buy a 4BD1(T) and isuzu gearbox (one just sold on ebay for ~$750 - motor and box), and buy an LT230 adaptor and linkage kit from The_grub on here.
