Thread: Side Steps

I've had the following three types as per the photo below:

Aluminium Side Steps (Top Photo)

• These provide the easiest entry and exit as they were the lowest
• Lightweight
• They got bent on some rocks. Oops.
• Decided to get something else next time because they got bent too easily - too low and not strong enough.
• They came with the car, so I don't kow how much they cost.

Terrafirma Rock Sliders (Middle Photo)

• OK, they're not really steps, but they got used that way.
• Very strong
• Excellent street cred 'coz they're rock sliders!
• Installation required removing the sills under the doors and drilling holes in the chassis outriggers. Bummer.
• I still managed to do panel damage all down one side of the car...
• Decided to get something else next time because they were too hard to use as steps - too high and you're balancing on a bit of pipe.
• I thought about adding a tread but they weren't really wide enough.
• Cost was about $900 (excluding fitting which I did)

Bearmach Side Steps (Bottom Photo)
Sorry for the poor photo.

• Tucked up out of the way
• Very usable tread
• Total weight is 21Kg.
• Installation did NOT require any holes to be drilled - yeah!
• Steel tube with aluminium treads - strong enough to take a couple of moderate bumps
• I'd prefer black treads to raw aluminium - I'll get around to sorting that out one day.
• My initial installation had a gap of about 20mm under the sill and the step sloped down. To get it nestled up nicely under the sills and to remove the slope I had to turn the step's front mounting hole into a slot.
• Cost was about $500 (excluding fitting which I did)

All of the above are good options for panel protection in a car park!

Personally, the Bearmach steps are my favourites out of those listed above and my wife likes them best too. I also once had a pair of sidesteps that were the same as the Bearmach steps but had a welded steel tread which I would prefer over the aluminium tread of the Bearmach steps.

Depending on how athletic she is your mum may prefer something lower...

My old mother in her late 70s and with pins in a smashed up knee from a fall would get into my County by use of a low but solid wooden box. After she was in I just put the box in the back. She would step onto the box, turn her backside toward the seat slide onto it, then swing her legs around. The box just sat in the back with a snatch strap and other easily removed odds and sods in it when it wasn't needed as a step. It was much cheaper than side steps and probably much easier for her to use.

I'd get Mulgo rocksliders if I was you - beautiful product but doesn't make it any easier for people to get in and out (a little harder if anything).

That should keep 'em out.

(In the interests of staying OT I'll point out that the factory sidesteps make entry/exit a piece of cake)

I got a set fitted by Opposite Lock - same as the older style original steps and sit higher than the current LR style.

About $800 fitted from memory.

I do like the look and sound of the "Bearmach" side steps that RVR110 has posted. They look like what I am after. I shall do a little buit of internet searching and see where my nearist stockist will be.

I have a set from TJM bought from the wreckers for $150. The were damaged on one side where they connect to the bar. Easy repair. They bolt to the outriggers. Not sliders but good for getting in and out of the 110.

That was another option.......To see if any wreckers had a set that I could do up a bit ! Cheers for your info.

Hi,
I put the steps from a crew cab onto my single cab.
They were off a burned vehicle, but they chromed up a treat.
My 93 yo mum can get in and out ok.
