Thread: Rust under brand new 90

Stealer is now replacing the vehicle with a new one, I suggest you also ask for a replacement.

If this is indeed seawater damage, who knows where else it got to and what will happen in the long run?

Sacrificial anodes bolted to steel in air will only protect an area about 5 -10 mm larger in diameter than the bare steel they are in direct contact with. This goes for galvanised areas as well - A bare steel circle of 5 mm or less in diameter on a gal panel will not corrode. Up to ~ 10 mm you will only get minor surface rusting (if I remember the images in my undergrad chem text books).

I think the propensity for land rovers to rust is appaling. Subaru manage to zinc plate most panels on subaru 4x4s (IRC they claim 90% of the body by weight is zinc plated).

Ben, do you think the above would be relevant to a box section which had been hot dipped but for whatever reason (contaminants etc) not fully coated internally? What I mean is, would the external coating protect the internal areas which did not have zinc applied. Say the material was about 3mm thick.....

My son's was the same,the paint job on the chassis was disgraceful,rust spots everywhere.
To LR's credit,when push came to shove,they not only repainted it,but also totally coated it with underbody protection,including using a spray gun down the inside of the chassis rails & then using a camera thingy to check it was done properly.They also invited us to check the vehicle on the hoist before we picked it up.

Well done LR,all under warranty.

No, that should read, Well done LRA ustralia! The Barstewards that built the thing in the Uk dont deserve any accolades. How much longer will that company continue to treat their traditional support base with utter contempt?

A box section that is galvanised on the outside ONLY will still rust inside - just look at duragal steel posts...

However, a box section that is hot dipped will have sufficient zinc inside not to rust, even if there are bare patches.

IME in most real cases any bare patches are few and far between.

Thank you for this info. Although the rust under my car is not that deep set, it more widespread though. Makes me wonder what the longterm problems may be, especially as his sat at two dealerships for a while, and mine is just off the boat. A warranty replacement of a faulty part is simple, and this is not the case here.

My story is so similar to that guys. Heart set on a Defender, first ever brand new car... And I love everything else about it

Saying all this. The dealer has been excellent far, even on this issue. They are claiming it to be snow from salted roads in the UK that caused the problem. I will have another chat with them tomorrow, make sure they check further. Ultimately I would like a replacement, and this was my first reaction upon seeing the rust. They seem to be doing the right thing so far, thankfully.

Additionally, the dealership's service department claimed, that the whole car is covered by a 6 year corrosion warranty.

Someone mentioned earlier that the underside was not covered.
