    Bang goes the Puma diff

I was doing some very mild 4wding in low 1st today on my job site crossing a 1ft deep V drain on an angle flexing the suspension, front wheels climb through then bang stop dead.

Initially I thought it had slipped out of low in the transfer and into nuetral, checked that, no that was still in low centre locked.

Try again, wind down window let out clutch, rear wheels spinning in mud no drive to front.

Get friend to look underneath, front prop shaft spinning no action at front wheels.

So either stub axle, cv or centre, but by the sounds of the noise I am guessing stripped crownwheel and pinion.

265 muddies, no difflocks only 25000km on the clock. It was povman's. Only had it a month or so

    Anyone else done similar?

Thats pretty poor for a front diff, especially if its a cw+p failure. i'm yet to destroy a 3.54 rover cw+p and I give mine a pasting

Make sure it's not a drive member.
My 130 did the same I thought it was the gearbox at the time, and then the axle.... $600 dollars latter with all the towing to mechanic and back home and then to another mechanic, it all came down to a drive member that I could have fixed myself for $50
I hope for your sake that it is just a member.

Thanks for the sarcasm....just what I needed, some useless posts....

I know rover diffs are weak, but I have a classic Rangie sitting here with 400000km on it, never done a diff and it has done its fair share of hard 4wding.

I have also seen smashed diffs on my friends Rangie's with 35in Simex and superchargers, and busted my supercharged Patrol on 36in swampers rear diff.

But standard size tires, easy 4wding low km car. Surely a manufacturing fault. Hopefully landrover come to the party and do it under warranty

Edit: Thanks for the 2 constructive posts above that were done whilst I was replying

Does anyone know if LR still get the drivetrain made by the same supplier. I am sure I heard / read somewhere on the internet, that they changed supplier with the introduction of the Puma.

There seem to be a huge number of diff issues with them, that especially in this case seem inexcusable really. (altho most of them seem to be rear)

While they arent as strong as a Patrol/GU they arent that weak.

Surely it must be either poorly manufactured parts, or possibly more likely, poorly setup when built.

    is it still in warranty?

    good luck.

lets have a close look at what they did on the puma. First hey fitted it with traction control that applies the brakes, fair enough they did that in the TD5's as well but then they fitted it with an idle up in first low so you couldn't stall it and of course all this happens at the lowest possible speeds where the brakes are most effective and in the lowest gears where the torque multiplication is the highest.

exactly what was it they thought was eventually going to happen when you put something that doesn't want to stop turning up against something that wants to stop it from turning?

Is there any way to disable the traction control in my new 110?
