I could accept the breakage if I was being a goose and if it was on a high traction surface like rock or had the wheel in a bind but seriously it was loose sandy clay with mud in the bottom of the V. I couldn't drive out in rear wheel drive, if that gives you an idea of the traction rating. It was easily crawling it in 4wd though. Dont even think traction control was activated in this instance.

I think my friend took a photo of me being towed out, I will try and chase it up.

Only 1 year old and 25000km, so yes still in warranty by a long way.

    Sorry to hear.

If it is the Diff it's the first front diff failing on a Puma that I have heard of.

Noisey rears yes...but again not many catastrophic failures.

As Dave says above I'm sure that traction control and torque contribute but I would agree with Pete that a fundamental manufacturing defect is the likely culprit.

The cross pin has probably come out. For some reason LR insist on using these diffs in the front Defenders, (sold in Aust), instead of the stronger 4 pin unit, (which is a direct replacement).

If the car is out of warranty I'd suggest upgrading to the 4 pin, or an aftermarket center, (ARB, Detroit, Tru-track, etc).

    Cheers,

Edit: Just saw your post about warranty, perhaps the dealer can be talked into fitting the 4 pin diff?? (Part number TBB000280)

Thanks everyone, I will certainly push for the 4 pin upgrade.

Here is a video of being pulled out:

I know rover diffs are weak, but I have a classic Rangie sitting here with 400000km on it, never done a diff and it has done its fair share of hard 4wding.

I have also seen smashed diffs on my friends Rangie's with 35in Simex and superchargers, and busted my supercharged Patrol on 36in swampers rear diff.

But standard size tires, easy 4wding low km car. Surely a manufacturing fault. Hopefully landrover come to the party and do it under warranty

Edit: Thanks for the 2 constructive posts above that were done whilst I was replying
Relax man. Your pride and joy might be temporarily busted but nothing that can't be fixed especially that you are under warranty.

A bit of lite-hearted feedback is surely not too much?

Hope you get it sorted mate.

Some interesting info on this thread. Especially the contact patch images Ashcrofts have put up.

    Scary stuff!!!

Since some have had no issues and others have been through 3-4 diffs in one vehicle, it seems most likely a QC issue in machining or assembly.

If it is a front diff pin failed... its deffnetly not the first... i cant see why your worryed about warrenty... thats what its there for if its a tru not at fault problem... but theres no way they will swap it for a 4pin... and im sure a 4 pin rear wont fit in the front?

LR replace the rear Diff on my 07 PUMA (under warranty), so they definitely have had issues with QC on their diffs. Pretty well known. But - never heard of an issue with the fronts.

Something else for me to worry about

Be v interested to hear what it was that's let go.

Hope LR warranties it for you no worries.
