Puma oil change - easy as pie

Has anyone bought this SLX Professional OE in Sydney?
I have been quoted $360 per 20l at both AutoOne and Repoco - sounds a bit much.

Iain_B got some for $200 for 20L (in Brisbane) so $360 sounds well overpriced.....

I've been to at least two dealers that don't use that oil (or Castrol at all) themselves...

Hi n+1,

I was just passing on what both LR and Castrol had told me after a number of phone calls. As I said at the end, I have no idea how they can check that.

Sure, they can measure viscosity, additive package and a whole bunch of other things, however viscosity changes as the oil breaks down, and many oils will have similar viscosity and chemistry.

If you use an oil that is chemically and tribologically similar to the OE spec then I doubt LR could tell without spending tens of thousands on analysis.

However for the sake of peace of mind, it makes sense to use the OE spec oil. An oil of equivalent quality will cost as much. And WA isn't significantly hotter than the east coast on average.

Yeh what would I know about oil sampling,I only did it everyday for 10 years or so and delt with companies regulary on both warranty and core exchanges. Pat

There are other oils that meet the Ford spec, they are all ultra low SAPS oils for the DPF, IIRC all the major oil blenders make a version.

Haven't we been through this before ?

What the companies say they can do and what they can actually do for a standard oil analysis are 2 different things.

One of my collaborators on my oil analysis research was speaking to the head of one of the largest oil analysis labs in Au the other day. She admitted that the tests were very crude/"quick and dirty", and were focussed on quantity/throughput rather than accuracy.

But what would I know, I have only been involved in this field for a couple of years... (however I have just had a paper accepted showing a serious error in the ASTM oil analysis method and proposing a revision)

Castrol Australia specifies EDGE SPORT 0W-40 Castrol Australia - NetLube

I rang Castrol.

They told me: The "official oil" as spec'd by LR is the SLX Professional OE, but they also said I could substitute Edge Sport. The price for Edge Sport was quite a bit more than the SLX, so seemed like an easy choice to me....
