I am not convinced it is the turbo.
If I were you I would take it to MR for a diagnosis first.
A turbo rebuild is easy for anyone who can manage spanners and circlip pliers.
Setting off on our Easter holidays in the 200TDI Deefer on Saturday and getting a grinding noise when the motor under load. Comes in around 3000 rpm in each gear. It definitely sounds like the turbo to me. Isn't a whine or a screech but a grinding sort of noise. I did have a screeching problem with it a few months ago which turned out to be nothing more than the mechanic who serviced it not clamping the air filter back up properly and it vibrating on the engine bay .
I'm not super handy with cars but can do basic stuff. Just wondering which way I should go. Heard horror stories of turbo rebuilds costing $2000 plus. I'm in Brisbane and the vehicle has around 150,000k's on the clock
Is it something I could do myself ie new gasket, bolt it on and reconnect hoses or is there more to it than that? If simple enough maybe I should buy another one and do it myself
Is buying one from a wreckers an option or am I only buying someone else's problems?
Where would be the best place to buy a new one or can you buy off the shelf reco ones?
If too difficult to do myself should I take it to a mechanic or just go straight to a turbo specialist?
Any advise appreciated

MR a bit far for me unfortunately, I'm on the Southside. I spoke to a mechanic in the Matilda Servo near Bulimba the other day. I notice there's always a Defender in the drive, turns out it's the owner of the Service station and the guy says he knows and works on Defenders. You could be right? not 100% sure but it does appear to be coming from that side of the engine.
If you find that you do need a replacement and are happy with a used (non recoed) unit Drop me a PM.

Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
I've found some under $1000 brand new. Could I fit it myself?
Took her out for a spin just before and my son was in the passenger seat and he swears it sounds like air to him rather than what I thought was a grinding noise. Problem is wont do it out of gear revving the crap out of it which make it hard to get a handle on where the air is sucking or leaking if that's what it is. Seems to only do it under load around 3000+ rpm. Get the usual turbo whistle around 1800rpm as it spools up.
Any ideas on where to look or which hose to look at?
Have a look at the hoses from the turbo to intercooler and the intercooler to air intake.
Sounds like a hose may have failed or be leaking. Check the hose clamps and check the pipes for leaks/cracks.
Also check the exhaust/manifold.
Pulled all the hoses off this afternoon and all clamps were loose, one was actually spinning around! Had the vehicle serviced a couple of months ago and they would have had to pull the hoses off to get the air cleaner out. So annoyed! Had a really bad whining vibrating screech from the turbo a week after they serviced it also because they hadn't clamped the air cleaner back into place properly.
Anyway, good as gold now. I don't even get the annoying little whistle I've been getting as the turbo spools up for the last two months!
Nice to hear you got it sorted and at the right price also
Now get out, give it a proper test and enjoy Easter.
