A decent wax & polish will do wonders to your paint & the trim is pretty hardy anyway.
Has anyone got opinions on the so-called protection packs offered by dealers. Here is what I am being offered:
Paint protection
Carpet and fabric protection
Vinyl protection
Electornic rust protection
for $1995.
Is this value for money? Any down side to the exterior paint protection?
Appreciate any comments.

They don't call dealers 'Stealers' for nothing.........all those so called protection packs are just another rip off. Sun, wind and rain will eventually kill any surface unless you maintain it over time yourself, no matter what magical coating they apply.
On a side note:
If you bought your car new, ask the dealer what they actually did for the 'Pre-delivery' fee. They will probably give you some BS answer, but we had the then Aust President of LRA give a talk at our club a couple of years ago and when he was asked that question he admitted that pre-delivery charges were just something that is accepted in the car industry. He couldn't tell us what was actually done, if anything.

What it will need is a good coating of sealant on the chassis,as the factory coating is a joke
You would think after 60yrs they would work out how to coat a chassis......
Iagree with others, the other stuff isn't needed....
And don't get the rust protection as that is a con anyway.
And I used to work for a dealer and refused to sell it

Was the protection package being offered by a big breasted women by any chance?Save your cash, they don't call it upsell for no reason. the only extra option I would get from a dealer would be window tint.
Thanks everyone - I eventually gave it the flick.

My wife recently bought herself a new car and got the paint protection applied....the Dealer threw in the fabric protection for seats and carpets at no cost, plus headlight and bonnet protectors, mudflaps etc.
She was offered the opportunity of watching the application of the paint protection.......cost was around $480.00.
She is very happy with it...... hence...therefore I am very happy.....anything that makes the pistol packin' mama happy has to be a good thing ....Yes?
For $2k on a new defender.
Go to a private panel /paint place and get your car rustproofed(fish oil or waxoyl) and if you want get one of the electro rust inhibitors,( i have one but dont know if i really believe in it.) this should be around the $500-750 mark total.
For the paint , it's a defender so it will get numerous "love stripes" from the bush. Just get some cheqer plate 3mm aluminium for the bonnet and rear quaters look on here, mulgo, rover evilbay or import from uk with current exchange rate should be around $400-600 depending on how many pieces you want.
For the seats , they are good quality but if you seriously want to protect them get some canvas covers around the $300 mark.
This will leave you about 500 for some sliders/steps or spotties.
I have used the so called Telfon type paint protection on my td5 (lasted about 3 to 4 years only) and they wear out, and give "bubble type problems in the clear surface on top of the paint which is blotchy and uneven and very hard to get rid of, just think of a old frying pan with telfon coating that was worn out and you get the idea, Use decent polish every time
