you havent got a kink in the flex pipe? I've seen that before
Hi all
I thought i would post on here as not much response on my usual uk forum.
One poster said his defender seemed more powerful with the snorkel fitted.
Basically i have bought and fitted a Safari snorkel and since fitted i have less power, to confirm this i disconnected the flex pipe under the washer bottle so engine was drawing air in from under the bonnet as opposed to the snorkel.
Power is now back its not a massive loss but i can tell the edge has gone of the power.
Any ideas, or is this how they are?
Thanks for any replies
Ps i cant remember if i i have posted before as joined last year trying to find out some info

Take the snorkel head off and check down the external pipe for any foreign material down there, I have heard of packing getting stuck down there.
I have heard someone else in the UK also mentioning this years ago.I think the consensus was that the 200Tdi Defender uses a 50mm (2") inlet, and when you fit the Safari snorkel, which uses the original plastic mountings under the cover on the LHS,somehow the turbulence causes a lack of power.Hence when I fitted a snorkel to my 200Tdi,I used a stainless unit from Southdown, that does away with the original plastic inlet ducting. Also the ducting, because of its design, which just clips together, isn't really water tight, and luckily when I removed it from my vehicle,I also found that the ducting tube had rubbed through and had a hole on the under side, which I wouldn't have seen had I just fitted a Safari snorkel.

Personally I think they are a restriction but have never done a pressure drop test to confirm it.
On my 300Tdi Safari Snorkel I cut off the spout inside the guard (it steps down from around 75mm to 62mm OD0 and replaced the hose between the snorkel and air cleaner (which is only around 2" ID) with an 80mm ID hose.

That is one of the major differences between the 200Tdi & the 300Tdi.The diameter of the inlet is much larger on the 300Tdi,and at least with the Safari snorkel on the 300Tdi it uses its own connection for the inlet ducting, whereas the 200Tdi uses the clip in factory ducting and tube, which isn't sealed and can lead to ingesting water

Good luck with removing the factory inner moulding if you have a heater box fitted,as there is no room to manoeuvre it around.I ended up having to cut mine through the hole under the side panel, totally destroying it.But luckily I went this way,as that is how I found the hole rubbed in the convoluted ducting tube.

The inlet through the guard is larger on the 300Tdi.On the 200Tdi it is only 50mm.I have never had a look inside a 300Tdi Safari snorkel to see what the internal diameter actually is.But the way they mount is completely different, apart from being on different sides of the vehicle.
All these things were what swayed me into fitting a stainless snorkel on my vehicle, and while it may not be as cosmetically appealing to some of the purists,I will take function over looks any time.
