best one I have seen was home made.....it was perferrated sheet, that is round holes about 8mm dia all through it...sheet was about 2mm thick and it had been folded to for corrogations...like roof sheeting but the folds were straight not rounded...end result was a very strong grill with lots of air flow.

    Actually perforated mesh reduces airflow.

The solids between the holes create vortex that reduce flow through the grill.

Does anyonme know whether an SVX style grille can be easily fitted to a Tdi Defender ?

    or

there is of course a further complication of the ARB winch bar and maintainign adequate clearance.

I very much like the look of this RR style grille

Stainless wire mesh. Just strands space over and under at about 3/8" square intervals will give maximum cooling.

it is wire, think woven...like the straps on a bed. so the ones running vertical will be under the horizontal then over the next then under the next and so on.

Regarding the air flow of perferrated sheet. I agree it may not be optimal, but given the pics shown and the amount of solid area on those horizontal peices I think that a full perferrated grill with no solids is going to flow enough air. My mates truck has NO problems with cooling. It runs OEM rad and intercooler and is heavier than most stock Landrover 130's and has more drivline loss than a stock landy

I only have a pic of a D1 "Saudi" version

    Attachment 38935

This perforated version isn't too bad, but not optimum - would be ok in all but the harshest heat, towing etc.

Remember too, the bigger the gaps, the more at risk of rock strike from flying stones.

The factory grill with it's slight tapers often knocks the up, slowing their impact into the intercooler.

Not a huge risk but a point no less.
