Thread: roverdrive overdrive

    Thanks Lots of Landies,

I will try Roverdrive direct unfortunately their web site gives the impression they want you to deal with local distributors and that is certainly the information I was provided by a UK distributor. Unlike Roverdrive the UK distributors do list their prices which enables a comparision with the Aus distributor.

Any information I find out Dave I'll post on this tread.

It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has fitted a roverdrive to a TD5, whilst in reality it is only providing the one additional gear there are lots of highway miles between offroad excursions. A reduction in revs should save some money on fuel, perhaps some wear and tear on the vehicle and hopefully reduce cabin noise???

Expedition 130 - please don't quote me but a few months ago i came across a canadian or US site which had them for (and this is the don't quote me bit!) just under $1700. in my mind i was thinking this would translate into approx $2400 by the time it all gets marked up here in aus by resellers so it was getting beyond my $ limit. the quoted price of over $3k is getting up there.

just out of curiosity i might see if i can find that site again.

Lucky8 Llc. - Take the road less traveled...

    US $1650

.........and it would be assumed they're turning a profit at that price too.

British Pacific advertise the series version at less than 1,400 + shipping, but you will have to pay GST and duty once it arrives because the value will be over $1000 here.

Land Rover parts, spares, Land Rover accessories - Search results for Roverdrive

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Thanks Pibby,
my research came up with the same results.
While I am not a retailer I find the price difference really is out there.
I have contacted a few overseas distributors and am waiting on replies.

    Cheers,

I've got a Roverdrive in a 300Tdi Wagon. The unit is quite robust and quiet. As already noted, the difference between 4th and 5th is the same as overdrive 4th, so it doesn't help as a splitter. I use it mainly as a 6th gear.

At 100kph it's doing 2,000rpm, which is fine unloaded or on a flat road. However on a recent 12,000km trip I found that the cruise control just couldn't hold the loaded 110 on gentle (outback) inclines. At 110kph with the revs getting close to 2,300 the cruise control managed okay - but then I lost the fuel economy!.

I think that with a chipped TD5 you'll be better able to hold 6th gear.

While I haven't noticed an increase in economy, it has a drastic reduction in cabin noise. Cruising at 2,000rpm on the freeway, the loudest noise is the wind hitting the snorkel.

Roverdrive recommend 10,000km oil changes with synthetic gear oil, so be prepared for higher service costs. Also the oil level is above that of the t/case filler, as you fill the t/case and then add extra through the Roverdrive. So if you have a weeping transfercase, then it's probably worth getting that sorted at the same time.

Another benefit is that for off-roading you can stay in low range, and use the Roverdrive for the fast flat sections between obstacles.

Fitting time with socialising and photographing was 4 hours. I did an installation guide for the Roverdrive in LRW last year.

    Thanks Michael2, very useful information.

A question, do you, or is it possible in normal driving to take off in first gear with the overdrive engaged?

    Cheers,

Yes, you can take off in O/D 1st. When I've come off the freeway, and haven't disengaged the O/D, I can drive off in O/D 1st without much hesitancy. I suspect an incline and a load would make it harder, but the only 'feeling' one gets, is that it takes a bit longer to get to your next gear change.

The trouble I see with the overdrive is your speeding up the T/case to lower engine rev's so really your wearing out the T/case to save fuel.It would be alot easier and cheaper to fit taller tyres,255x85 or simply a disco T/case.Your making a mountain out of a mole hill in my opinion. Pat

I'd agree Pat if he wasn't trying to run a 300Tdi in front of it. There isn't enough low end torque to tow a big load off the mark anyway without using low range, so 255/85's or 1.222:1 gears will be a problem if thats what the vehicle is needed for. On the other hand, if only long distance driving with medium loads and needing the clearance off road with the bigger tyres I'd go for the 255/85's.

    (Actually I have, but i don't have a 300Tdi...)
