Hi Drew, I've got tracks and jack mounted on the roof rack.

I recently made a clamp for a BBQ gas bottle to attach to the ladder. My ladder is steel with flat rather than tubular sides, so it has some flex, which can either save it, or make it flex back & forth too much and crack through.

I wasn't sure how it would last, but to strengthen it, I drilled a rivet out on the body capping and put in a stainless bolt that pokes out. I secured the bolt with a nylock, then a clamp from the mounting system for the gas bottle secures to the bolt with a wingnut and that gives it some extra stabilisation. The product test was 12,000km with about 2,000km of off-road, including the Bungles & Tanami tracks. It all survived well.

So I think the idea of securing a ladder carrying weight over rough terrain to 3 points instead of two is worth applying to the aforementioned design.

One of the td5/td idefenders in the landrover owner mag last month had the highlift jack mounted on the bonnett east west about a foot from the windscreen with the attachment points on the bonnett set back so it could still open. Not 100% on the legalities but you can mount a tyre there so a jack further back

should not cop to much flack!

Drew, do you run a front bar? can't recall.

I have seen the army stick there hi lifts on the front bar down low behind the main uprights of the bar. Alternatively I have seen a hi lift mounted across to the top of the bar on a disco as well.
I to mounted mine across the rear x member.

I purchased an ARB hi lift/shovel bracket, cut it in half with the grinder to make two separate brackets.
Shovel across the front, jack across the back.

as for Maxtracks...well....chuck em

Not 100% on Qld rules but in NSW anything that projects out forward of the bar is illegal. So fishing rod holders, the old tow ball for launches, same reason why the winch hooks must be secured back and under the 4x4 .

I believe fishing rod holder are legal so long as there is fishing rods in them, the holders must be removed when not in use.
