Good idea, I like it.

My only slight concern would be heat build up against a pressurized container.

Don't know what the pumas are like but the td5s and before absorb a lot of heat from the gearbox, exhaust (possibly on passenger side) and engine.

I have 2x1kg units mounted above the rear door.

I decided against putting one on the seat box below my knees for exactly the same reason you say.

As mines a double can I didn't hve the luxury o the cargo barrier.

Heat wont be an issue with fire extinguishers. I have seen them mounted on equipment that gets a lot hotter than a Land Rover Floor.
I keep 2 a small unit mounted on the tunnel near the gearbox lever and another 1.5kg unit in the rear.
If you are overlly concerned with heat a bit of insulation will put that thought at ease. If you are going to go down the box path another ide is to get a recessed holder like used in most caravans, cut the appropriate hole and mount. Will keep it out of the way of your legs and still easy to get to.

I can also recall a previous thread where someone did some very nice modifications on a Puma straight after delivery, including an Ex-box and a very tidy storage box with access from the side.

While we're on extinguishers, at the most recent LROCS meeting one of our members showed images of their misfortune with their Defender on a recent trip to the CSR. While still on made road a fire started under the bonnet, they escaped the cab but the fire was well established in the engine bay and in not many minutes the vehicle was a pool of aluminium on the ground.

Is it feasable and affordable to have a remote operated or automatic extinguisher for the engine bay?

I was even thinking of using a 1Kg extinguisher mounted under the bonnet, connected to a choke cable device near the drivers position.

Yep, easy peasy, how many nozzles do you want ?

All modern racecars have plumbed extinguishers with nozzles into the engine bay and into the cockpit.

They are generally electrically (electronic) fired but can also be mechanical and it's been a while but I sort of recall 2kg and 4kg bombs available ?

Race and Rally at Greenacre supply them.
The manager there is a very good friend of mine.
They aren't cheap, but work well and it's cheaper than trying to hitch a ride out of the Simpson.

Mine is mounted at the drivers feet, on my seatbox. I don't even notice its there, and I've unclipped it several times just incase... Lucky I've never needed it in anger.

Mounted under bonnet is on the cards too......

The Zero Zero mechanical control looks almost exactly the way I was thinking. A 1Kg or 2Kg bottle directed diagonally across the engine bay would likely give you enough time to get to the front, open the bonnet and hit it with a more directed stream from another extinguisher. The cable mechanism would have to be protected from accidental discharge and have to lock the extinguisher nozzle open, but with a little thought it should be doable.

As you say may save the rest of the vehicle and a walk out of the desert.

BTW: I'd also be getting rid of as much of that flammable plastics from the engine bay, as we know the Mont Blanc tunnel fire which killed 39 people, was most likely caused by a discarded cigarette butt getting into the plastic air cleaner housing of a Volvo prime mover carrying a load of margarine and flour.
