I am about to attempt to do an engine swap this weekend, I have a new clutch (AP, was sold as a borg&beck) to fit, but did not get a new fork or bush. I stumbled across this thread a little too late....Its only a "temp" engine change to get my set of wheels rolling....weeks not over should I get a new fork too? I do not have the facilities to change out the spigot bush so was going to keep my fingers crossed.

....does the old broom handle still work as alignment tool?

Sorry to hijack this, but did not see the point in starting a new thread on essentially the same issues...

A wooden dowel or metal bar or tube that goes inside the bush can be packed up by wrapping it tightly with electrical tape to get the closest fit. Then get the rod as level as possible before tightening up the pressure plate.

I used to get the Spigot out by filling the hole with grease & then hammering a tight fitting woioden dowell in, out pops the spigot !!!

No probs. It's the kinda stuff I'm after and I'm reading with interest.

I always replace the fork and spigot bushing, as 99% of the pivot balls are about to push through the fork anyway.

This is true. It's often quicker walking....

You have to weigh up the cost of the part vs the arse factor of replacing it. And if the arm goes then it's an arse of a job! So for all it costs, I would say replace it.

Done, Ordered me one up today. Plus all the little clips etc. Even the gearbox gods, Ashcroft recommend it I see.

    Defo the arse factor.
