I don't have first hand info and I'm not sure if it's going to be that common over in Oz.
It might be worth sniffing around on some of the UK based forums as chassis rot is a little more common over here!!!

						Gday,
I have a 110 county with a 'you guessed it' rusted out rear x member. I was planning to just plate it up and re drill the holes to make it look original however after attacking it with a gurney I discovered more rust than initially expected.
Since the gurney incident I have purchased a totally new rear x member.
My question is, has anyone ever fitted one to their car? I realise it is a lot of work but any handy tips or tricks would be appreciated.

						Welding is not an issue. From what I can gather the process involves removing the fuel tank, lifting the body and any other components so that room for welding and grinding is available.
Was your S1 a similar process?
This is a picture of the new x member which will be arriving monday.
I have been confronted with a similar problem recently and was about to start a thread about it. As pointed out, the replacement will have to be welded to the chassis, hence requiring removal of the fuel tank as it seems. I haven't got that far yet, but will have to in due course.
I just wonder if there is someone out here who has made a bolt-on conversion that will make changing corroded rear cross members easier?

Your existing x-member doesn't look too bad. I have repaired worse (without needing a new x-member).
I think Inc's comment about the 6-burner was that he may be willing to help you out with welding etc if you offer him suitable enticement.
I hope you got one with chassis extensions, that will make life much easier.
Drop the fuel tank out, give yourself room to work. Be careful with the wiring loom in the chassis. Don't cut off too much.
Hi,
I was able to weld mine without lifting the body (and there is no rear tank on a S1).
I cut the old cross member out in bits so I could get to the top weld from the inside then bolted the new one back to the body and tacked it to the chassis. Then un bolt from body and weld.
My cross member is like yours with no chassis extensions so I had some 2mm steel plate profile cut and used that as the S1 chassis is only 4 flat sheets any way.
