    Donaldson in TD5

Anyone fitted a Donaldson Air Cleaner to their TD5 a la Isuzu to replace the original air box. Keep thinking how inadequate that filter is, even around town its quite dirty after 10k.

Got Donaldson Pre Cleaner to replace that safari snorkel ram scoop which should help a lot , but still wont adress the dust getting past the filter onto that MAF sensor

I'd use a modern plastic cased version too, not the old style metal Cyclopac ones.

Donaldson and Cummins/Nelson have a lot of engineering info on their respective sites to match the filter to the airflow requirements.
BTW, is there enough room under the bonnet to fit one ?

plenty of room for one of these
eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d

even room for the next size up
but changing the element might require its partial removal

very tempted, but I'll check the airflow requirements,

I doubt that would flow enough. Using this calculator you need about 350 to 450 CFM Air flow (CFM)

The one in your link doesn't flow that much and you'd be restricting your engine.

Thanks for that - geat calculator.

Ive been trying to converte the Mass air Flow gm/hour readings from my Nanocom to CFM & I just cant figuire it out

I just crunched the numbers for a Isuzu 3.9 @ 3000 rpm = about 186cfm but with turbo over 620cfm , i wonder if those that fit turbos realise their Aircleaner now need to be 3 times bigger - I doubt it !!

But a 450 cfm donaldson wont fit the gap left by removing the TD5 air cleaner so I'll drop that idea for now.

    cheers Don

    Im surprised...

I live in "Dust-ville" and yet my Air Filter goes well past 15,000km without issue.

I also dont suffer from fine dust in the intake tract like some others I read about...

I do, and always have, run a snorkel.

That site is slightly dodgy. CFM for turbo values should be ~x2.

The 4BD1(and 4BD1T) are fitted with a restriction guage to indicated when the filter is blocked. The pressure drop with a T and an NA air cleaner is acceptable. The only way to go bigger would be to fit the powercore type of air cleaner, however these have a higher pressure drop compared to a cylindrical element anyway.

The TD5 should have good filtration standard, however the easiest improvement would be to fit a snorkel with a cyclonic pre-cleaner on top. This should easily double your air filter life.

Installed precleaner = fits perfect direct replacment for Safari Snorkel ram head
Really noisy with the window open when you floor it but otherwise OK.
No noticible effect on grunt, will see if it affects economy.

    $39.00 ebay

Well after using a Tankful of Fuel with the Donaldson Precleaner I was shocked to find the economy has Improved , I thought it would be worse due to no Ram effect. Perhaps because when it starts making the cyclone noise I think its sucking too hard & sounds like a restriction so back off.

    Anyway - before 12.3 l/100 k after 11.1 l/100k , Towing trailer .

and there is considerable amount of bugs & dust in there already !!

    Don,

Ive been warned against the donaldson type air intake on td5's. My old mechanic reckoned they restricted the airflow too much. It might be worth giving him a bell to discuss. Ive got the number if you need it.

Also the following link says that a 3'' donaldson type can only provide 320cfm which is below the required 350-450cfm as stated by 'inside' in his post above.
