New Bar, Which Winch Should I Buy?

I have finally got around to installing the bar I purchased at the NSW Landy Expo. Photo attached.

    Which winch should I buy?

(The box did not survive the downpour, so I do not know the brand. I bought it from Dungog Motors.)

How often do you think you will use it ?

How much money do you want to spend ?

I bought a Warn for my D3, paid good money for it and used it once to get somebody else out of trouble on the way too the cape in 2009.

With the PUMA, I thought I save a couple of $$. Bought an Iron man 1200Lb particularly for trip across the Simpson, never used it.

So the Iron man was a good decision. They get good reviews and are reasonable quality. Used with a good recovery kit, winch blocks and monitor excessive heat it will do the job no problems at all.

(All winches, regardless of brand need to have heat build up monitored)

So if you think you will use it heaps, then spend the extra $$ if not save the extra $$.....

    Just my thoughts

    Thanks for the advice.

I purchased the Tiger11 12,000Lb. I don't plan to use it heaps, so I think I got good value for money.

Easy DIY install, except I had to use some battery cables from Super Cheap to reach the battery under the seat. Assume this would be the case with all winches?

    Hey Beckford,

I think you will be happy with the tigerz, they also get good reviews and they are the right price.

I wired mine in, yes had to get longer cables.

Did you install a battery switch ?, so you can disconnect the power to winch. If the winch has full time power to it, the winch could operated by anybody wether you are there or not.

    Cheers

I had a Tigerz11 on the wagon. Worked fine retrieving (maybe a bit noisy if anything). Had a problem reversing the rope out under load. After trying everything the dealer and manufacturer recommended, ended up having to remove the hook to release it

Apparently not the only one to have this problem after doing some research. Would make it hard for me to buy another. Hopefully they've rectified this, as it was otherwise a good winch at a good price.

My advice is to test it for this issue before you use it in anger.

Another good value for money winch is the TDS winch sold by the Opposite Lock guys. It’s based on a Chinese industrial design and it has an absolutely insane line speed. I trialled them a couple years ago when they first arrived in the UK and I was very impressed. As all budget winches, a little noisy but definitely worth the money you spend on it. They’ve got a low profile and a “bridged” model.

Goodwinch in the UK (google them) sells them and their website sings their praises.

+1 for the Ironman 12000lb winch.

I had one bolted to the front of my Jeep and intend on reusing it on the front of the Defender. I was used in anger in Tassie and back home in Canberra, including pulling the Jeep halfway up a very steep mountain on its own when the engine packed it in...

I would happily buy another! Only change I would make would be a swap to synthetic rope and get that 12kg off the nose of the Defender
