    Puma fuel economy

SHMBO and I have a TD5 ninety and Puma SVX, no complaints, my problem is since I de cated and played with the TD5 its fuel usage is far better than the Puma. The Puma is very hard pressed pulling only reasonable loads to do 500km per tank full. Without a load, ie the 13 ft dinghy and stuff its not bad provided you stay under 100kph, but loaded it drinks it. I would be interested to know other owners fuel consumption and if decat/exhaust change and or flash/tune have made any improvements in fuel useage before I spend the wifes hard earned money

Stick vehicle but with a snorkel, bbar, and a canopy on the back which hangs out 150mm each side.
At 100klm on the speedo, or actually 95klm =600klm before fuel light comes on
At 110 or actually 105klm = 550klm before light comes on.
    Average weight carries 500kg

    Hi Allan,

De-Cat, BAS tune and intercooler will make a huge difference to power and economy.

I had Pete Bell make a custom map for towing and one for performance. With the towing map loaded, the PUMA pull's real hard from 1900RPM, you hear the turbo spooling up much much earlier that stock.

Fuel economy has drop to easy 10's on the highway loaded for a trip, and about 12.5's with the van on the back.

I just removed my Brit-Part snorkel and fitted a new Safari snorkel and straight through tubing to the air box. I am anticipating better economy again as the loud sound of air being sucked through the old snorkel has disappeared.

    Cheers

I've got an '07 - bog standard apart from snorkel. Initially it was running 11.5L/100 and now with a few more KMs on it, it runs at 10.5L/100 with a medium load.

Unlike my 300TDi, which will easily get 9.5 to 10L/100, the puma just can't crack the 10L/100 barrier. You'd think that a 15 year newer car would be able to improve on the old 300TDi economy..... however, it goes a lot harder than the 300!

I too have a problem with the ammount of fuel my Puma uses, 110/120 KMH, driving on the Motoway, i get about 480K from a full tank.

Bull bar, Snorkle, Rack ( Allluminum 50kg ) Awaning Alluminum 14kg, rear cargo bot and fridge, say 100KG.

My fuel warning light just came on at 462km.This was done just pulling a 13-14ft alloy boat and some gear. Not near what we carry going north. I only once got 500+ and that was being very careful as the fuel stop we had planned had closed up for keeps (Paynes Find). The speedo is right on the money as the Puma's got 255/85's BFG muds fitted. I think Drover had the right idea and I may have to go down this path after Christmas. It uses a lot more juice than my sons D3 2.7D.

My defender was getting between 530 and 600 before the fuel light came on with varied driving with lots of stop start city K's, i now have a 132L tank and the light comes on around 900 now but i can get 200k more out of it easy after the lights on, last tank was 118L fill at 1100km with the light coming on about 890 - so basically i had 14L left in the tank after driving 200km on the light!!

I have had a chance to play with a Atric device and Alive tune, of course not in my defender being that its brand new, but i am very impressed with the difference it makes to power but not sure on the economy side of things but i will find out. With this tune, from about 1500rpm to 3500rpm it kills the stock tune in everyway, i really dont think there's alot more to gain about that 3500 though.

Hey Cal, you need to mind those calculation if 14 litre's left in the tank. It might well have 14l left but how much of that is below the pickup ???

I have only ever taken my 140L tank down to 12L left, wasn't game to keep on going. That was Central Coast to the Gold Coast, towing a 2t off road caravan on 1 tank. About 950K's (warning light had been on for 125K's when I filled it up)

This sounds a lot like my "towing tune", but the performance tune will race to 4,500rpm's in nothing flat, of course it is flat below 2,500rmp's.

I take it pretty easy but my 130 gets between 9 and 10l /100km. I have a bullbar, snorkel and canopy.

My worst was 14l/100km towing a fully loaded troopie and a camprite trailer along the hume highway that had done a gearbox.

The satisfaction of towing the troopie home was only topped by knowing I did it faster and with less fuel then he could have driving on his own :-)

The 90's only got a 55 liter tank as standard and I get up to 535km before the light comes on around town.

In full touring regalia with the roof packed it does come down a touch though. I think this has more to do with stuffing the lack of aerodynamics even further rather than the added touring weight...
