    Defender Frustration

We posted the following post and received lots of views and no replies!

With 350 Ks on my 130 and some tired shocks I have inquired about some standard replacements, and looked at Brit-Part, Armstrong and Boge. But every one I talk to in Australia and UK want to sell me brands two and three times dearer. Are the ones I have mentioned below standard quality? I was certainly happy with the original performance.

Are all the members only interested in the rough and tumble
We use our 130 as a work horse on our farm which has some very rough terrain plus we use it to cart sheep and cattle with a load on the back and a trailer full behind. It is also our adventure vehicle loaded up with our Trayon Camper on the back and Canoe on top to some of the very remote parts of Australia. We have never been ones for all the fancy suspension and other modifications that cost an arm and a leg and yet have always made it home in one piece.
So is there anyone out there with some basic standard advice And if you can help me get our profile picture up agin that would be appreciated.
    Thank you Peter

I've got Terra Firma standard travel big bore on the rear of my 110 with Firestone air bags because of the load/boat when we go to the far north. On your 130 you don't have this problem. Up front I've standard travel shocks again. I got the Terra Firma shocks at a good price and I am more than happy with them.

Cannot help you with your choice, mate, but when replacing my shocks on either vehicle I usually chose OEM due to some reports about dubious quality of B-P's alternative.

    Hey Peter,

Mine is set up the same as Allan's. Standard length Terafirma Big Bores / Poly-Air airbags on the rear.

The front I have got a 50mm lift, to compensate for bull bar and winch, with Terrafirma Pro-Sport 50mm.

All four shocks cost about $400, from RovaCraft at Mascot.

    Cheers

Peter, you seem to think much the same way as I do - ie keep the vehicle fairly standard, no need for major mods when you buy a Defender in the first place.

I believe that all vehicles are built to a compromise to appeal to as wider clientelle as possible and to produce an 'balanced' design where one component is not out of sync with another. I have done a few minor mods to my Defender and still have a basic reliable vehicle that serves me well.
I have read numerous posts about mild to extreme modifications that have upset the 'balance' of the vehicle/s and has led to unreliability and more often than not the need for further mods to try and 'rebalance' the vehicle.

If OE shocks have served you well then there is no need to waste money on expensive alternatives, which may or may not work well with your spring/load combination.

Try Karcraft Australia P/L on (02) 9737 9944 for a good price and service.

    Peter,

The current puma 130 models use gas shocks from new now, instead of oil only like all the preceeding ones. i would order a genuine/OE set to suit a 2008 model, they are exactly the same in all other respects.

Can't help. Mine was already fitted with a lift, heavy duty springs and swaybar with LTR shcks with remote canisters. Since learn't that the shocks are painfully expensive.
