pjlhat - he hasn't won yet. Swap out the 300 tdi for an Isuzu 4lt turbo diesel, buy a roof top aircon and get some recaros from the ideal seat co in Melbourne. Then you'll have a faster, better off road and more comfortable truck .

yep I agree with that..I watched standed hliuxs negotiate a slightly rocky track I.e just above graded firetrail and I kid you not the hilux bent its paper side steps. the acr just lost traction for a second and was not able to recover and iwth the really low ground clearnace it was toast from their.

Perhaps a caveat, the IFS hilux are crap off road. The live axle hilux are great off road. But then again any IFS 4x4 is a joke in my book.

what ever you do don't let him watch the Dakar Rally...

a hilux is doing very well at the moment (considering the car has a fraction of the funding of say the minis in the race)

haha maybe if it breaks down you can show him then

yeah, its just way to hard to get decent rubber for them and the big ass rims limit sidewall flex...

besides most new rangie LR4 (Ever notice how the 4 is under the $?) owners are just too scared to do anything proper with them. Those that do are to mentally unstable to have their opinions counted.

They have a good basic engine, decent ergonomics and what is not to love about a dual cab. Seems like a good basis for customising. Just gotta be careful of the rust demon.
Hi Mick, just remember you MUST change the 2.8 engine oil EVERY 5000km, not 6500, not 7000 but 5000km. This is very important with these sooty engines, the 3L (2.8) and 5L (3.0) both suffer from failed bearings and crank damage if you don't. I mention abomination from the ride quality and gutlessness, even WITH a turbo. We have done several turbo conversions to these, and fitted 5L (later 3 litre) engines etc etc and none go as well up hills or use as little fuel when working hard as a 300Tdi does.

The tray area for a dual cab is a joke, unless you are intending on carrying light loads as you will end up with bent or cracked chassis, the strength of the steering upper link on the drivers side swivel housing is also pretty average, one decent hit and it'll bend, the ability for the rear wheel bearings to last with any sort of prolonged pounding and hard use is questionable, and a real 4X4 utility STILL using semi floating axles??? ( Nissan Patrol excepted as they are pretty much over engineered)

Anyway, I agree many use them in arduous conditions around the country and I say each to their own, i wouldn't have one.

I was out, off road in the work hilux today, must say I was longing for the off road ability of the defender, however there is no way a 300Tdi is going to catch or keep up with it on the road, that's about the only thing it has going for it though.
I don't think the aircon in this one is as efficient as the last one I had though.

I agree Martyn, The D4d is another kettle of fish, a decent engine in a useless IFS and 'weak' vehicle. The 1KZ engine in the earlier model (Factory 3 litre turbo) was also a great engine, but let down with the surrounding chassis etc.

Again, thats just only MY observation.

Yep it certainly does. In my book anything IFS is a waste of time. The amount of money and engineering that has to go into getting halfway decent lift plus the very limited down travel compared to standard live axles means they are as pointless as ****ing up against a wall to me.
