    NAS, SVX, LED's... Please explain?

Righto. Been searching through for a while now and into the uk/aus LR parts websites like a IT addict. Please help me where I am wrong etc.
    Thanks.

Glossary: I have used lamp to describe the bulb and light used to describe the pastic on outside. Again please correct me.

LED. Quicker, brighter more efficient than traditional bulbs. Missing anything?

NAS. North America Specification? How ate these lights different from Aussie delivered defenders?

SVX. Special edition DEF often (always?) have clear rear lights but colored led lamp under the clear ? Plastic light. Correct?
These seem larger than original about the same size as the reverse light. Are they just 3 reverse lamps with different courted bulb/LEDs lamps?

Do guys ever change their rear lights to look SVX style or is that frowned upon? What's the culture.

    Ps.
last Q what does the abbreviation SWBMo ?? Or similar stand for? Is the a section where this is available. IMHO I need it! ( that one took me a week to work out- clearly my vocabulary cannot come up with the combos necessary!)

Don't know about the other bulbs but NAS Headlamps , or Headlamps from any country that drives on the wrong side of the road can not be used in AU because the low beam spreads across to the right of the road instead of the left.

. SWMBO (She who must be Obeyed) is a bit sarcastic for me so I don't use it, not so much an acronym because WIFE actually has less letters, AKA Handbrake

    G'day,

    I'll help where I can.

Yes NAS stands for North American Specification; they're effectively bigger versions of the normal lights, to suit the Yank's import laws at the time.

I think they look ok, and I also feel that the standard lights are a little too small for modern day city driving.

There's a few people on here who've fitted LED's, a search should bring up some details.

I'm not sure what lights the SVX have; other than having clear covers.

SWMBO; is an acronym for She Who Must Be Obeyed, referring to wife, girlfriend etc.

LED's - quicker (no) brighter and more efficient (yes).
Probably longer lasting and submersible(ish) if that's important but of course IF they break they are harder to source/replace that a new bulb. They are also more expensive, and by their design generally do not have much in teh way of sideways dispersion of light - whereas the standard LR lamps are visible from any angle.
If you retro-fit LED lights you'll need to change the flasher unit or put extra resistance in the circuit otherwise they will flash too quickly.

I like the NAS spec lights (incandescent variety) and intend to put the set on the rear of my 130 tub as they suit that I think.

The SVX has clear covers with coloured bulbs, though I don;t know whether they are incandescent or LED.

Bugger the culture - do what you like !
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

    SVX has the following -

    Tail / Stop = LED

    Reverse = LED

    Rear Fog = LED

L/R Blinker = Incandescent (Coloured bulbs)

All are clear/covered when not illuminated.

All rear lights are the same size or diameter.

    Cheers

    Hi Jimb,
check out the attached link from Mud 4X4 from UK
they sell the LED light sets for about 500pounds plus postage.
I once made an enquiry from Alto Land Rover for the SVX original lights and you're looking at $2000.

MUD-UK - SVX Defender Clear LED Tail Lamps

Is it worth it? well its a personal thing isn't it.

if you're interested in the Led light let me know as i'm looking at buying them myself and i think we'll save on postage if i buy two.

    ...........!
I've fitted LED's to all my lights; internal and external excluding main beam (Headlights). Got all the LED's off ebay - not that expensive.

In relation to the blinkers it's a lot easier to simply replace the flasher can (with one designed to work with LED's) than fitting resisters to make the flasher can work. In fact fitting resistors seems self defeating and the worst option.

If you don’t wish to change flasher can then I found leaving in one “bulb” provided sufficient resistance to allow the standard flasher can to work.

The down side with the electronic flasher can is you don't get the "noise" and you don't get the trailer dash light. Also the electronic flasher can is about $A35. (Navara)

In the UK they sell a electronic flasher can that does work with the trailer circuit however its about 50 pounds when I looked sometime ago.

Is it worth going to LED’s probably not but it is easy and fun to do. Now when the “main beam” LED’s improve and come way down in price it will be something else to look forward too.

I want to change my bulb lights on my 110 defender to leds
I can get a kit with all the led lights and a flasher unit

is this flasher unit some thing I just replace an existing plug or flasher with or will I need to do rewiring ………..I’m assuming these led kits are just plug and play but I’m not sure about this flasher bit

    many thanks

Plug and play. the flasher is basically like a relay, just swap. Heck, it even works on my OKA.
