    Tdi 200 130

    I am thinking of buying my uncles 130. I have had a gq td 42 turbo patrol for the past 17 yrs and it is still a great vehicle. Why the change, well I have always liked landies since my days in the army and the 130 is a great platform for remote area touring. I have driven this vehicle before and whilst it drives well in standard form it is no match for the patrol in terms of power and outright ability to cruise at the speed limit. The motor of the 130 is reasonably fresh after a rebuild due to suffering a timing belt problem a couple of years ago. Is it possible to increase safely the output of the 200 tdi to say 100kw and 350 nm atw whilst retaining reliability and longevity, or should I look for 1 with a Td5. I would prefer this vehicle as it is in very good condition with a good service bistory. I know some will say drive slower and enjoy the view bu this car will be pretty heavily loaded on trips hence the need to increase the capacity.

    If the 130 with the 200TDi, is as well maintained as you suggest, then it must be a case of reliability over performance.

    G'day Two-up - there are some great options floating around, but all of them are quite expensive.

    Probably the best set-up that I've seen is updating the turbo and intercooler, as well as replacing the exhaust. All up it's approximately a 3k job if you do it yourself, but you will surpass 100kw quite easily.

    Do a search on this forum and you should be able to find it. From memory it's a UK company that makes the kit - turbo/intercooler etc. There was a thread in the Isuzu area about upgrading the 200tdi I think ????

    As for exhaust - well that's easier to find in country and probably easier if the local place makes you one from scratch.

    Just wondering if it is a UK import? AFAIK the 130 only available in this country with 300Tdi from 1994. If it is a 300 Tdi, performance bits are aplenty and they are a pretty good little engine. I have been in one towing a Disco 1 on a trailer for 300km and returned 15l/100 and did it easily, saw 100+ on the flat with ease.

    Hi Two Up. For fear of opening up a can of worms here, I currently run a 130 with a Td5. It sounds great and is good on fuel, but/untill you put a decent load on its tail or come up against a head wind. Coming back to Adelaide from the Flinders this avo we hit a head wind and that was that.... foot to the boards at 90 kmh. I plan to chip it but am still undecided as to doing this on a 200000km engine. Now, the bad bit. Up until this Land Rover, every previous Land Rover has had a 6 cyl diesel Nissan motor fitted by me. The best was a FD6t powered 101... That flew! I have toyed with the idea of a TD42 and gearbox in the 130 and have one lined up! Having 'Tweaked the neighbours Td42 powered Patrol with intercooler, larger turbo and Landcruiser innards in the Patrol's fuel pump (std patrol pump can't keep up), we've managed to double the hp and add another 150nm of torque without problems. All in all, if you are used to a TD42 grunt, the Td5 and Tdi will never cut it! Sorry guys.

    Thanks for all tbe replies guys, much food for thought. at this point in time I don't know if changing over will be a step forward or a step backwards or just a step sideways. There is no pressure to make a quick decision so I will keep researching. A mate has a Td5 that he is just about to fit a garrett 2052v to and is going to chip it as well so I will see how that goes. I do like the gq as I can cruise very easily at the speed limit regardless of wind or gradient whilst returning pretty good fuel figures, but the space available and possibilities of the 130 makes for a hard decision. Keep the info coming.

    Than again, I've seen postie bikes conquer the OTL and a complete round Australia trip; deserts, mud and whatever nature could throw at them. FJ1100, 1200 or 1300 couldn't do that.

    Tend to agree you will find the 130 a little slow on the open road when compared to your current ride. As soon as you hit the dirt it becomes irrelevant though.

    Still looking at engine options for my 130 for the previously mentioned reasons. The 300tdi is great little motor. But, "little" is key word for the overall capacity of the 130 and I like to be able to the speed limit here (130) and have a little left over for passing .
