I've just been through my policy wording from Allianz and can't find any mention of whether my vehicle is covered on roads or private property. Only the previously mentioned wording about not being covered if it's being used for motorsport. I'm sure legally then I (and anyone else with the same cover) should reasonably expect to be covered for any lawful use of my vehicle.

I mean you would expect to be covered if you had a prang on your own driveway wouldn't you? And even if that driveway was near vertical and up a dry creek bed. The only loophole I can read in my policy is if the insurer determines that I was intentionally trying to trash the car. One thing I might expect to be stung with is the cost of having the vehicle recovered to where a regular tow truck can load it up.

It would be interesting to read wording from other people's policies and build a database of non-Landrover suitable insurers for reference on this site somewhere.

RACQ are good for all occasions except competition.
When I required their service all they asked was what happened. Had I been drinking. And the name of a third party to clarify if I was or was not under the influence. Apparently when they were contacted nothing was asked about what happened.

I think QBE have an exclusion for 4WD parks as well as the usual such as motorsport, time trials, etc.

    I'll dig it out.

I'm with Alliance. I called them and asked what their policy is with 4wds and the answer they gave me was 'if you're legally allowed to be there we will cover you.' so as long as you have a permit if you need one or have paid entrance fees etc. it sounds like they will cover.

When I signed up to Budget Direct, I asked about 4x4'ing and received the same answer, 'if you're legally allowed to be there we will cover you.'

I checked with my insurer (AAMI) before getting a policy and have got responses in writing that I am covered anywhere (gazetted road or not) as long as I am not participating in a competition.

It does depend on who you are insured with so I think something worth checking (along with water damage) before handing over your money.

I put AAMI to the test a few years ago by 'creating' a write off in a mates driveway - No questions asked and payout, including buyback of damaged Defender all finalised within 10 days - no problems. And I'm still insured with them with no loss or reduction to my 'no claim' bonus.

yes I was surprised when RACQ wanted to re insure me. What really amazed me was when it was $100 cheaper to insure the new car which was 3 times the price of the one i just wrote off; and keep my no claim bonus, and rating 1. I just don't get but it sure made me happy.

How did he do that? I gather it was at LCMP as the tow truck shows Kilcoy.

Yes it was at LCMP.. but as I am unaware what his insurance company covers him for, lets just say it was most probably done on the main gazetted road because the other tracks were fairly treacherous due to the wet conditions and being torn up the week before (Easter) and not on one of the red extreme tracks..
