    Oil filler cap under pressure??

My 1998 130 300TDI with 350Ks is leaking oil from the oil filler cap.

I have tried to increase the seal presure of the cap but it continues to leak and appears to be under presure, yet all the breathers are clear. The motor is runnung well and performance is good. Any suggestions please

excessive crank case pressure, re-check your your breathers. Does this pressure seem to lessen when the engine is up to operating temp, if so could indicate rings are worn, valve stem seals are worn. Dave will most likely have a few more clues. What colour is the exhaust on start up, on start up take the oil filler cap off, what colour if any is the blow by.

check the pcv valve for operation.
if it is free and allowing gas into inlet then i would be looking at doing a compression test.
crank case pressure is either blocked valve or internal engine leak like worn rings.

I,ve seen truck engines that would blow your hand off

    is it using oil?

300s have a great ability to run smoothly and with solid oil pressure but only 5L in the sump.

take your tappit cover off get someone else to start the motor and see if you can spot any smoke coming out of your valves , blown exhaust valve was pressurising my sump . ps have some degreaser handy it gets a bit messy

If its using oil could be head gasket failure between cylinder and push rod. My 200TDi has got 375Ks on it, and thats where it had gone

Yes it does get messy with the rocker cover off

Hi, how were you able to tell that it was the head gasket as against worn rings, or did you only discover this when you pulled it down.

In the UK just about every 200tdi I've seen requires a new head gasket every 160-200k.

Fortunately is quite an easy thing to do.

Have you had your coolant tested for contaminants? That would give you a good idea if the head gasket is leaking somewhere but it's by no means 100%.

Yours does sound like crank pressure build up though and if all your breathers are clear then I'd be whipping the head off and going from there.

On most of the 200tdi I've been into the bores have been as clean and tidy as they were when brand new. Rings tend not to be a big issue.

When you get a new head gasket, make sure you put the 3 holes one back in (1, 2 or 3 tabs on the side to identify thickness. 3 holes on the tab is the thickest). Don't forget new head bolts too, they do stretch and I suspect yours will have been re-used at least once! Also make sure you torque them up in the correct order an to the correct value.

This is a sooner rather than later job on you to-do list!

This is showing where my gasket had gone. It looks worse than it really was as some of the gasket had stuck to the block.
