Thread: Marine carpet for the rear of defender

Just have a look at your local marine place and see what carpet you like, we use selleys 'Quick Grip' contact adhesive, you'l need a big tin as it soaks into the carpet, but you'll be flat out peeling it off if you slide things in and out.

Pat, were you proposing to glue the carpet direct to the metal?

FWIW I did this years ago to a HiAce van I was trying to make 'family friendly' ... Was OK for the first few months -the noise reduction was a big improvement..then I discovered that it was somewhat impractical not being able to remove the carpet, especially when one or two of the kids went through a phase of car sickness

In the end, I removed it all, glued the carpet to masonite. The masonite was held in place with patches of velcro.

Later, I got some sound deadening underlay (about 10mm thick) which went under the masonite. The setup lasted for about 5 yrs...then it was time for new carpet.

I made up some simple boxes screwed into place over the internal wheel arches and covered them with the carpet. Given the regular shape of the wheel arch 'benches' in the Defender, you could lay the carpet direct and keep it in place with velcro...

Bunnings appear to have a reasonable selection of marine quality carpets. I bought a couple of metres to put under a barbeque on a wooden deck to catch fat splashes etc..I just hose it occasionally and let it dry.

Can you get Bunning stuff by mail order in Newman?

PVA-type glues are effective for securing the carpet to wooden backing -not sure how effective they'd be for carpet to metal...

I have used quick grip on all my marine carpet.

x 2 on getting a big tin. 2 + liters

and you can still hose the back out if you decide to glue it down.
it is marine carpet after all.

might take a while to dry though... unless you suck it out with a wet vac?

Didn't do it myself but got my auto trimmer mate to glue black marine carpet over the top of Dynamat sound deadening material (essentially 1.5mm butyl rubber with thick aluminiun backing) which I'd installed. The trick was to then add a second layer of marine carpet velcroed to the first layer. All up this gave brilliant sound deadening and was very easy to keep clean as the upper layer (which catches all the crap) is easily removed to clean. Worst case toss the 'upper layer' and replace it. Got this idea from the front of Kayes D2 which has the same 'factory accessory' setup. This was in the Oka but should work just as well in the TDCi. Glue used was spray on contact adhesive.

Does anyone know what colour teh interior of teh 1995 Defender Tdi's were originally. Currently I have ribbed Grey Marine Carpet in miine but are looking to replace so if any photos of the original please send them on.

Fitted fine and now been there for 3 years

Also anti mould which is always handy in defenders.

x 3 on the Quick grip. Be sure to give the surface a good scrub and degrease. The glue on mine is coming away on the areas I was lazy on prep.

Marine carpet is the way to go. The ability to hose it out and its hard wearing qualities make it a natural selection. The quality of the carpet is a matter of budget. I went with the cheaper rubber base but there is the fandangle option which would certainly be a better product. After 2 years with 2 labradors on a weekly basis and numerous camping trips under its belt it is holding up very well. I went for a tight weave because of dog hair. It also doesn't catch as much on boxes and stuff you store in the back.

I also installed a shelf across the back to bridge the wheel boxes. A bit of angle riveted to the wheel box. A bit of 1.2m x 1m x 16mm marine ply, carpet on top and Bob's your uncle. Next time i'd go 20mm ply or add angle on the fore and aft edge to stiffen the shelf. It's great for storing your recovery equipment and tools under the shelf. Stops them being missiles in the back of the boot. The shelf hasn't compromised my storage capacity to any great extent and the dogs appreciate the larger level floor space to move around.

Not sure if it improved the sound deadening. I'm sure it did but being a defender the noises from the front drown out the rear diff anyway.

I have "Autex Seatread Marine Carpet Tornado" in mine that I got from Whitworths. I got a huge tub of glue, but wanted to fit it first before I glued it down. (no real going back...)

That was 2 years ago, and I now have no intention of gluing it. I have slid large hand heavy items in the back (compressors, gearboxes, boxes full of books etc) and nothing has made the carpet move at all. That said, I did screw it down at the rear door under the metal lip.

Being able to remove it if required is too much of a bonus to loose.. when I have found the carpet not to move at all without glue anyway.
