    Locking Spare Wheel

    Hey folks,

    I have just purchased new wheels and tyres: Cooper ST Maxx 285/75 R16 on Black Dynamic steel 16x8 wheels. Love them to bits. They look the business. They are a nice compromise between all terrain and mud terrain. Haven't been off road yet, though. Don't want to get them dirty

    Does anyone have any good advice for securing the spare (on 2002 defender), so it can't be easily stolen?

    Also, has anyone bothered to run a bead of silicone on the steel rim where it is welded to stop crud / sand getting in there?

    It depends on what kind of wheel carrier you have, but the simplest way I've seen done is with a short length of plastic covered chain looped around and a padlock. It tends to look a bit agricultural though. I'm not sure if you can get lock nuts to suit steel wheels like you can for alloys.

    Depending on where you live, I don't think Defender wheels would be stolen as much as other makes, as they only fit other Landrovers.

    It's the tyre I'm worried about. Some low life might pinch it, and ditch the rim. Land Rover people don't steal, they are good salt of the earth people

    I got two matching sets of lock nuts for steel wheels from Devon4x4 in the UK about 4 years ago. Enough for my fender, a trailer and two spares.

    I recall the postage price was quite reasonable.

    I cut a piece of 1.2mm steel plate and put it under the nuts that support the wheel on the carrier. This was cut so that it was under one of the other stud holes on the wheel, and drilled to support a peg I turned up that protrudes through the wheel, and has a cross hole for a padlock.
