    runs like crap

My 2001 defender TD5 has been sitting around while I do stuff on it for over a year. I started it last week a couple of times and it idled fine. (The only thing it did do was when I revved it up and backed off it would die down to idle but would give a little hickup as it reached the bottom of the idle)
But went to drive it this morning and it barely runs, coughs and splutters, idles very rough (sometimes stops).
I managed to get it home in low range but wondering where to look.
Nanocom doesn't see any errors other thans ones that have no bearing on the problem.
    It now chugs when idling

Could it be fuel gone off after a year or more in the tank or ???

Any ideas what to look at ??

    cheers

    Tim

Possibly Oil in the injector harness, check the red plug on the ECU.

Hell yes not only does the fuel go off but an algie may have grown in it as well blocking the filters. Very common in diesels. Lets hope it hasn't made it to the injectors. then a hugh cost may occur.

As for oil in harness unlikely as car hasn't been running but unplug cpu and check.

I would check plugs on cpu first as this is the easiest however I would put bets on the fuel filter being clogged

    Try disconnecting the MAF.
It will run better disconnected than faulty.
It will at least eliminate it as a problem.

Then pull out the MAP sensor and give it a clean also the AAP sensor in the airbox.

Oil gets into the Harness connectors on the injectors inside the cam cover, this intermittently insulates the injector from the ecu signal and causes the misfire so often attributed to the Oil in the ECU.
A new harness is the best cure but simply pulling of the connections and cleaning them gets rid of the misfire for a while.

Is the fuel pump making much noise?
    Could be low fuel pressure?

    Cheers,
    Paul.

I've got a 130 'project car' that hasn't been on the road since 2008, and still with the same tank of diesel that I fueled it up with on its last trip out, over 4 years ago.

It gets started and run about once a month, and no issues at all with idling/running, so I don't think just because your fuel is old it will neccessarily be that.

Mine is kept inside in a shed, so it is out of the weather if that might make a difference.

Not sure if I have stuffed anything up !
I have been doing lots of things, but nothing on the engine/fuel system etc.

Now to go and try the suggestions...
