    Question which clutch kit & fly wheel for td5?

    Hi all

    Just after some advice on which Clutch kit & fly wheel is best for atd5 Defender.
    I've been told the valeo ( I think I spelt that right) isa good kit. I'm after a hd kit& flywheel.

    Been told I've got maybe 6
    months left so thought Id start picking bits and pieces up now.

    If you need heavy duty and can live with a little extra noise and vibration fit a solid flywheel conversion with clutch from these guys

    Flywheel & Clutch Kits

    I run these in my 90 and a family members D2a

    Option 2 landed was about 1100$ last time I got one in.

    About 5,000 kms ago my flywheel sh@t itself. $850 for the flywheel + new clutch and thrust bearing. Can't remember exact $$ but the grey matter thinks in the order of $1200 to repair the lot. I opted for the standard clutch on advice that the HD clutch gives you about 30,000 extra kms but is a pig to drive in traffic. Original clutch had 347,000 kms on the odo so I can give up the 30k kms to save a quivering left leg in traffic. Fitted the OEM spec flywheel. I didn't know any better.

    No discernable difference with the option 2 clutch pedal feel to the std setup.

    There is a slight rattle on idle with the clutch up. If you press the pedal it goes. Under load there is no noise

    In the Disco you can hear it fairly clearly, say if you are sat in traffic with the window down. In the 90 I cant really tell.

    TBH, if you dont work the car hard, its probably not worth the hassle.

    I do a bit of towing and offroad as much as possible, usually med standard but generally im very kind to the ol girl.

    I think I paid around $450.00 landed here from England for a standard flywheel and Valeo clutch kit.

    I fitted a solid flywheel after the standard dual mass failed at 130000 k. I don't know what the vehicle did in it's early life but I bought it at 100000. The solid flywheel is now at the local dump, vibration and heat from the gearbox at highway speeds was excessive and I had to rebuild the gearbox at 160000.

    Mainshaft, fifth gear, third gear and complete rebuild kit and other bits. Before fitting the solid flywheel the gearbox plug magnet only ever had a slight paste on it. After fitting the solid flywheel the magnet started to increasingly collect metal until the gearbox failed. You can't argue with physics.....noise is vibration, vibration causes heat and excessive heat causes wear.

    I will keep fitting standard flywheels at 100000 k over rebuilding gearboxes at 160000.............................no I won't, I will have an auto coming from Ashcrofts in a couple of weeks.

    Hey mate, do you have any mods on the engine or do you plan any?
    I've only ever fitted one solid flywheel conversion, I've only ever seen one broken crankshaft on a td5, and guess what yeah same car,d2.
    Might be a total freak event but once burnt and all that.
    I've always fitted the Valeo kits they are ok. If you have all the upgrades and drive like a goose it's gonna fail early. Also fitted the ap kits they're ok too.
    I have a second hand Valeo kit If you want it, it has 1000 Kms on It, and I know second hand clutches are frowned on but this thing is new, also have a decent flywheel and all hydraulics if you want them.

    Tdi's have solid flywheels with their R380's and there's a few 4BD1T's with R380's behind them and the g/boxes are surviving (much to everyone's astonishment)

    If an engine is going to cause a problem it'll be the firing pulses of a 4cyl, not a 5, and particularly the big Isuzu.

    I reckon there was something else going on not related to the flywheel
