Mal I am intrigued what was the nature of failure to cause complete brake loss in a late model vehicle?
Dual circuit braking system surely you had something.
Yup thats the headline, only one ever blah blah blah, I am very unhappy. LR aus dont keep stock of the master cylinder (110 only done 16000km). special order from bodjy bros UK being flown in experss air
All I can say is lucky I learned to drive in scrap utes with no brakes and managed to stop- lucky to only have been doing 50km/h, lucky my family werent with me, lucky because we had just come back from a trip up the coast. Lucky Lucky Lucky
I am ANGRY this should not happen on a new vehicle-perhaps they should recall the whole lot??????
rant over - I wonder if they will send me a t shirt- I survived my Dender experience!
Cheers

I find it hard to believe you lost all brakes as djam said dual circuit braking was invented to stop that happening, and it's very uncommon for the master cylinder to fail,it's usually a leak from old age or people not setting them up correctly. Pat
Yep very unusual to see a total loss of brakes, worked for 23years on Land Rovers from Series 2's, seen plenty of leaking master cylinders but never a complete and sudden failure, tell tale was always low fluid and wet pedals.
The feed back from the dealer and LR aus is that the master cylinder is by-passing.
It was a 95% failure as when I applied the brakes the pedal hit the floor and only slight braking occured, as in it was not going to stop at all, I guess there was a bit of luid making it to the calipers. the pedal did not return up and after some vigorous kicking (pumping) of the pedal a small amout of braking came back, and then the pedal returned to its noramal position. At the next set of lights I had the exact same experience but I was ready for it so tried the brakes sooner. Needless to say after that the brakes returned for the remainder of the drive, but the pedal would slowly sink to the floor if you kept pressure on it.
My 130 Tdi had a booster failure with cracks around the bolts, but that was managable as the drama would only occur if you needed to brake hard and fast.
Yes you are right, this should not happen to modern cars with dual circut braking, it was very odd indeed.
Its amazing that with 1 call to Rovacraft I could also organise a genuine LR master cylinder but instead I have to wait for the part to be flown in from the UK.

Hi All,
I thought I would give a quick up date. It took a week to get the part in from the UK and install, bleed the brakes etc, It seems as though it was definitly the brake master cylinder that was bypassing. Any how its all sorted now and going as well as ever. A word of warning is that it gave indication that I can recall that there was an issue???????
On anther point LR aus promisse fto keep me up to date as to what was going on, needless to say I had to call the dealer and ask the questions.Barbagallo in osbourne Park were very good and accomodating and cant paise them enough. LR Aus well Im not done with them just yet.
Happy to have the car back though.
Cheers

my monies on the fast fill valves failing.
had their been an accident the insurance companies get out of paying you line would have been
"failed to have brake fluid changed IAW servicing requirements"

I don't think they could have expected to need to change the brake fluid in the first 16,000 k's? I seem to recall it's at least 3 years before the fluid needs to be changed according to the service schedule.. (But I can't find it now.).. PLUS if it's been dealer serviced I'd be counter suing them for not maintaining it.
I've had a brake master cylinder slightly fail on a PUMA in first few months, started leaking onto the bulk head.
Check the servicing details, brake fluid is supposed to be changed on condition or 12/24 monthly....
if the vehicle has sat for say 9 months from production to sale it could quite easily be out of spec.
Only found out about the insurance company line because of someone whose kid crashed a car with the comment of no brakes, fast fill port seals were warped and the brake fluid was down below dot 2 standard when it was ment to be dot 3/4.
The officialish line was that the fast fill port seals had deformed due to the moisture content of the fluid, the deformed fast fill port seals had allowed both brake circuits to recirculate. Evidence supported that the vehicle had been stopping on the front brakes only for quite some time as there was rust in the rear brake drums on the braking surface.

I had a rental hilux brand new do the same a few weeks back and i was told "master cylinder bypass" never heard of it before. Pedal went to the flooooooorr jessssss just pulled up using gears ,hand brake and lots of luck. The rental guy said they would swap it over but i would have to drive it 200ks to there yard ???? No thanks!! Any way i poped under the back and bled both rear lines and good as new. called up the rental mob they had the vehicle in at toyota for a week when previous renter complained same thing .I noticed that one of the bleeders was only finger tight.
