Certainly very true Ben, I have heard the same as more and more mechs leave to chase the big $, the industry is in peril.

You find that you would have to pay them so much to stay, you may as well close up shop and do what you said.

I know I would have trouble sleeping at night having to charge that sort of amount for relatively simple jobs, mark my words soon the general population over there is going to just say enough!!!

When we were building in Perth we found it cheaper & more reliable to fly in trades from Melbourne, pay them living away from home allowance, provide accomodation & pay for flights home every four weeks.
It was also cheaper to truck structural steel in from Melbourne & Adelaide.

That's unbelievable they were expensive when I was over there but now it's a wonder they sleep at night.Anyone watching that show on SBS "Dirty Business" about mining ,it's kinda mind boggling.

I got quoted $1000 plus just for the install of a rear TrueTrac in my D2 in Brisbane before christmas, from 2 different diff speacialists PLUS they were both rude on the phone.
Found a bloke working out of a little shed round the corner who was an absolute gentleman, charged $400 and as i was leaving to go on a trip a few days later, he offered for me to bring it back in for a free look over before i left.

If anyone needs diff work done in Brisbane I can recommend Diff and Gearbox Industries in Newmarket.

We have had trouble getting mechanics for a long time and the ones that apply you wouldn't let work on your lawn mower. I know a few that have gone to Chase the big dollars most come back its not what it's cracked up to be . What's the hourly labour rate over there for a run of the mill workshop?

Who knows, they may even get fed up enough that they get their kids to do a trade instead of an arts degree. Or even get vocational studies put back in as an option in the school curriculum for children that prefer to work with their hands.

I think a bit more dough in the apprentices pocket would go a long way to getting more young blokes haveing a go. Kids today want the big bucks for pushing paper not crackers for pushing spanners same goes for other trades

if thet cant get kids to take apprenticeships then matureage is the way to go. most have experience are doing it cause they want to. employers just look at the $ and miss the big picture.
a kid will do his trade and leave
a older person may well stay on if you are decent to work for.
