TD5 An oldie but a goldie, oil in the harness

Just checked the plug on the head and it seems oil has arrived. Only a matter of time I guess. 110000 km 2006 defender.

It's not been there long as last checked at last service 7000 km ago. No sign of any trouble yet and nothing at the ECU plug, but I know I can't hang around with this as I don't want to run the risk of a poisoned main harness, so....

Given I have to replace the injector harness....

What additional parts do I need i.e. in addition to a new rocker cover gasket?

Is there a sealed / upgraded harness that'll stop this re occurring, if so where from and do they actually work?

Is it worth flushing the main harness through to prevent any future issues or should I just leave it be?

Any part numbers for additional or suppliers would be helpful. Any specific tips on doing the job appreciated too.

I know this has been done to death and I have read all the threads in the good oil about this (so I,ll thank anyone who suggests doing a search, thanks) but these few questions answered, and maybe a tip or two will help me proceed promptly, do a good job and hopefully dodge the bullet on this.

    Cheers,

    Ian.

I'm doing this job on the weekend on my 2006 defender. 120k, mine however seems to have injector seals leaking so I am doing the harness as well while its apart.

Got mine from southern land rover, easy to deal with, in stock.

MR Automotive in Brisbane put sealant in the harmesses they sell. I have not heard of anybody having a failure with one of theirs. Mine, which was sealed up by them after it had done around a 1000 ks, (harness wasn't purchased from them, but they sealed it while they were sorting out other issues) has now done 140000 without issue. They will deliver parts anywhere.

    Cheers, Mick.

    Ian,

There are two part numbers (from memory). The original part number and a superceded one.

The new one has an additional o ring in the plug. Nothing else needed but rocker gasket.

Hi Ian , If I can add my 2p worth while you have the engine cowle off , check condition or the wires around the block . Vibrations can make them fray plus heat makes them brittle . I hope yours are ok , but it's worth a look. good luck .jimr1
