    EGR Valve - I think.

So I finally got the defender back last week after a month of it being at the smash repairers in Narracoorte, courtesy of a kangaroo jumping out from behind a teatree straight into the drivers side of the vehicle. (Ah the joys of living in the country, he could at least have had the decency to get in front so the bullbar could take care of him). $6000 later and a $920 excess (the joys of not quite being 25) she arrived home.

Everything was going well until I loaned it to some family members to take to Adelaide. I had a panicked phone call a little ways into the trip to say that the engine management light had come on, I told them to do three short on/off drives and see if it cleared itself - which it did - so they kept driving. Long story short I spoke to the dealer mechanic and he said to take it on a long trip I had planned for the end of the week and see if that helped clear anything.

Had a great trip to Mildura until about 10kms out of town when I went to overtake another vehicle and the engine light came on again and I lost power - not limp mode, just no power. Turned the vehicle off and on again and hey presto everything felt normal. On the trip back from Mildura yesterday I had an increasing problem with it so that by the time I got home I was having to switch off and restart every 3 minutes or so. I got quite good at doing so at 100km/h. I think I would have switched off and restarted over 35 time in 400kms.

Anyway my question to those that know more about these things than I do is, is there anything else besides the EGR that could be causing these problems. I've only just got her back and I don't particularly want to loose it again for any period of time.

    What year is it?

Did the engine make any louder than usual noised before it went into limp mode? (My new MY13 blew an intercooler hose and that was intermittant for a little while before it got worse.

    Hi,

A few tell tale signs mine gave me when the EGR was playing up was a very squeaky clean cycle when you turn the engine off, and also a bit of what sounds like injector rattle at idle and also uneven idle.

This might be a controversial comment but if you put 200-250ml of non synthetic two stroke oil (JASO-FC) with a full tank of diesel and keep this up every few tanks i bet you don't have any future problems.

    Cheers

Hi Bilbo, its a 2012 130 with 24500 on the clock, has been pretty well trouble free to date asides from a couple of braking in issues and the kangaroo strike.

If its a 2.2 the probably its not the egr, the 2.2 has a different egr to the old puma. I reckon you'll need to get it to a dealer to read the codes.

Just a quick followup in case somebody else has a similar problem down the track, the cause of the problem was a faulty air flow sensor.
