    TD5 Electronics

    G’day all,

My dad is after a TD5 defender but is wondering about electronics issues. Do TD5’s have ABS and Traction Control? If so, do they suffer the same issues as the Discovery with their infamous “Three Amigos” problem? Is the ABS and/or Traction Control able to be turned off if one wanted to rely on talent rather than a computer to get them up a hill?

Also, are there any other major issues with the TD5 that I should watch out for (other than the ususal Series/County/Defender firewall, footwell and chassis rust and oil leaks)?

    Cheers

Don't knock it, CDL + TC is a killer combination.
AFAIK the Td5 fenders have ABS and TC (at least some of them do). Then again, I could be completely wrong.
All Td5s have issues with oil in the loom migrating through to the ECU plugs, but that's a relatively simple fix.
Fenders have the ECU under the seat box, which could be a potential issue if you're doing lots of wading.
I'll step back and wait for:
    a) The howls of rage that I dare suggest that a defender could struggle without traction control
    b) A more defender qualified person to answer your questions.
    Cheers

I bet! Hopefully I'll get to find out first hand sometime soon

I'm pretty vague on the whole traction control thing, does it work by braking the spinning wheel thus transferring power to the opposite side of the diff? I guess the main concern is the traction control packing it in at an inopportune time. Not sure if this has ever happened, but I generally distrust things that I can't see working.....such as electricity

That's how it works on Discos anyway, not sure about Fenders.
I've not heard of it packing in as you say, but I tend to drive with a degree of mechanical sympathy so I don't know how it goes when stressed

They may not technically get the 3 Amigos but they do get the 2 Amigos
Same errors and problems as the D2 well at least mine has anyway.

Not difficult to deal with though

    You didn't specify which model?

Td5 110's has all the above, even electric windows

Td5 130's have none of the above, sorry they have ECU under the seatbase, not even electric windows they are just series III's with a bit more comfort, wind up and not sliding windows

I'm thought early TD5 Defenders didn't come with TC and ABS? (Maybe optional extra, so some have it.)

    The Extremes all had it...

And even if it does 'fail' it just goes back to a normal operation.

But it works well, really well.

Hi Krafty , to answer some of your questions , I have a TD5. Extreme , it has T/C and ABS. on hil decent . You don't have to turn anything off , like many I thought would like to fit a rear diff lock . After driving some very steep Vic . high country tracks ,that were at times both gravely ,or slippery to say the least , the TC. worcked just fine . so for me spending $2k is hard to justify . I believe good tyre choice and presure will make a big differance to off road performance . regards jimr1
