    Cargo net fitted

All finished and cargo net in place . These are easy to make just pin together and take it to an upholsterer. We tried to sew it up on the wife's machine but it wouldn't do it. Its only to stop the pillows and soft bags flying forward. Now onto the next project fitting a winch, but which winch winches best?

There are lots of debates on that topic...

I think in terms of a combination of reliability, ease of installation (compared to PTO or hydraulic), and practicality in use, the Warn 8274 is hard to go past, but they are big and relatively expensive. However you will only need to buy one, ever... there are 30yo versions still in use... It is a bit like the landrover of the winch world...

    Hi Sam,

Yep, that's them but Dolium is the sole importer and I don't think you'll be able to buy them from FR directly. The Australian price is typically $15 to $20 higher per box...

They make a couple different ones namely the Wolf Pack based on the 7.62mm ammo boxes (they're the ones that will fit 4 exactly in the load bay). They come in standard and low profile and then the Gomo based on the 5.56mm ammo box which is a bit smaller in all dimensions.

The Wolf Pack is actually quite large and while it holds a lot, it does become a bit of a pain looking for stuff. The Gomo is smaller and maybe more practical, but at only $6 cheaper it becomes a bit of a practical calculation exercise. I'm not 100% sure how they orientate and fit in the Defender (I think its 3 long and 3 wide), but they all stack very solidly on top of each other.

They've always been used in "frame only" drawer systems based on those found in SADF troop transports. Pretty easy to swap empty ammo boxes for full ones on resupply and they are held in place pretty solidly.

I've however never been in a position to justify the cost of the full system as the boxes aren't really cheap to start with!

    Boxes

To get the 210 high boxes in you will have to span the full floor with ply from the top of the wheel arches. This becomes a problem because you cant get a piece of ply that wide in through the back door in one piece. The join will have to be supported. My floor sits at the same level as the wheel arch and is bevelled on the sides to fit. This size just fits in diagonaly through the rear door in one piece.
The boxes I used are 190 high and are a nice snug fit and they only cost around $15 each at bunnings made of heavy duty hdpe with clip on lids.

    Hi Mike,

I've gone with the split deck option supported in the middle as per your description. The deck sections have foam strips on the outside where they meet the body and the setup gives me full width at the same level for packing options.

The split deck also means that I can strip it all out in about 5 minutes when it's not needed. I've got a big dog and he hates the deck as he has to lie down to stick his head out the window. I only put the deck in when we've got a trip planned and need to pack appropriate gear.

    Cheers,

Check out the Mako Avenger - good price and gets great reviews. An 8274 is an awesome bit of kit, but not easy to fit - I went with the next best option a XP9.5, but they aren't cheap.

If I was doing it again id probably save the coin and go a Mako.

    Thanks Lou, good info.

The quality (material selection and thickness) of most plastic storage boxes these days is sh*te so i'm prepared to invest in some decent boxes, if they last, although i think i'd do without the frame system for that price and make myself a full-width shelf as others have done

Might head to local supplier and check em out...

    Sam,

The quality is second to none in all honesty.

Have a look yourself, but these things are as close to indestructible as a plastic storage box can be.

My 2 main boxes (Wolf Pack) I carry on all day trips has all my heavy recovery gear in the one (shackles, chains, hi-lift adapter, etc) and my soft recovery gear (straps, strops etc) as well as my pump in the other.

Both are showing little or no wear at near enough 10 years of use.

    Cheers,

    Lou
