Make or buy a heavy duty wiring loom!!!
What a difference it makes
I dont have the photo here to post, will try tomorrow.
G'day all,
I've noticed recently that my headlights in my Puma are a little dimmer than they were originally, and (of greater concern) they dim every time I operate the windows or use my indicator.
Have any of you experienced this?
Can you offer any suggestions as to what might be happening and how I can rectify it?
Cheers,
James

The symptoms suggest either a failing battery, or more likely a bad earth connection to the battery or the engine/chassis earth. Another possibility is a failing alternator, possibly due to a slipping fan belt (not sure of how this is tensioned on the Puma)

The vehicle was serviced yesterday and I asked that they take a look at it. Unfortunately they mistook the aux battery for the starter, disconnected it, and then decided that the wiring was wrong and suggested that I either have it rewired or take it all back to original.
They did say that they tested the alternator and all was well. As far as I know all earths are good. So, that leaves the starter battery. It's a two year old Optima yellow top (long story) that's only been mistreated once. It is however causing me some grief these days on return from my FIFO stints. My wife tends to disconnect the charger for one reason or another each time I'm away, so, two weeks or so and it needs a jump. Not too good I guess. My National Luna gauge doesn't seem to indicate any dramas.
What do you suggest I do to test the battery properly?
The traxide loom upgrade is worth doing to any Defender regardless. My 07 Puma just burned out it's first headlight switch and Drivesafe's loom not only prevents this from happening but makes your headlights as bright as possible. RACQ (or the WA equivalent) can test your battery for free anytime.

I know there's a local pre-wired solution - but I'm on a bit of a budget squeeze at the moment. Can anyone comment about the value/quality of these two eBay kits?

Same H4 bulbs with 5mm wiring via a relay on one side, standard wiring on the other. Sorry I cant find pics of low beam. Cost about $60 from memory, including new H4 plugs, relay and 5mm twin cored wire. I had 6mm earth wire lieing around already.
If you got a made up loom, how would you get the plugs into the headlight box? Maybe the wires could be removed from the plug? Or cut a bigger hole.

All new wires from the battery to the bulbs, and used the original loom to switch the relay. My original H4 plugs had melted and disintergrated.
Those lights were 55/60, but have upgraded to 80/100 now.
I would like to try some of the +50 55/60's to see how they go, since I put the 20" light bar on I dont need the high beam as much
I dont know about other models, but the 86 County has a near sealed box the headlight sits in. The Hole for the wireing is only just big enough for the wires and gromet
