    Fitting rear drawers

    Hi everyone,

Im currently building a simple set of drawers for the rear of the defender, just a single large drawer between the wheel arches and then a sheet accross the top to make a flat floor. I have had a look at a few different threads and cant find the answer to what im looking for.

How have people attached their drawers to the car? (I dont need them to be removeable.)

    Jim

110 I assume? A 90 is easy if seats are removed as the seat holes are just right.

Not sure about Puma but if its a Td5 then removable drawers are the go, as you will need to access the hole / cut a hole in the floor to get to the fuel pump.

Ive found a 2/3 width drawer on the left is best, a full width drawer is a pain as you have to fully open the rear door to pull out the drawer. the other 1/3 is left open so you can poke recovery equipt ect down there. plus if you have a center divider the top wont bow & can take a bit more weight.

mine just jams in there and can be removed with difficulty when empty.

I saw this method on one of the other threads..seems like a lot of wasted space in an already narrow area for what i want. I think removing the tiedowns and then attaching through the remaining holes via the wheel arch is the way i am going to go, that way i can use the factory tie downs on the top so i can still attach things. If it needs more than the 4 points i will have to make more holes..

A sheet of thick ply will sag if unsupported by a divider underneath or some strengthening cross pieces.

I had drawers with runners that were bolted in which I had in my Counties and previous Defender but now I have a split drawer, one 1/3 (width of stove) and brew gear which stays in the car but is only accessed when the door is open to 90 deg. The other side is filled with food and crockery / cutlery which stays in the car.
There is no need for anchorages or slides.

There is a dead space at the rear (towards rear seat) about 300mm which a heavy spares and tools which aren't required often, out of the way and with the weight where you want it. It has a separate lid above this area for top access as well.

God luck with whatever you decide.

    Hi Jim,

I have attached a pdf of a simple drawer design similar to what I built for my defender.
The drawer runs on teflon strips or laminex glued to the base. The sides of the 'tub' bolt to the car body using the existing tie down points using the following fixings available from bunnings.

Leg Furniture Acc Leggz 5/16x3/8in T Nuts Pk4 - Bunnings Warehouse

Install the 'tub' section then screw the top to it.

All was made using ply, with the drawer being glued and screwed.

That's about the standard fit out.
