Thread: Puma Engine Failures: heads up

I love how all the diehards come out with a ton of possible problems that could of caused it, but put the responsibility back on the owner to check all these things. If I checked everything that was a potential problem on a daily/weekly basis, I would not get out of my drive way.

At the end of the day, its a FSH vehcile that has only done 120K. What a joke!

Very isolated I would think. I'm yet to see one head gone on a puma in 3 years.

Not a Defender but my '08 Ford Focus TDCI with 97,000km on it has just destroyed itself. Seems to be bearings, but will never know (unless i get bored and pull the engine apart), managaged to source a low km replacement. Not sure if this series of Ford engines are related to the Defender, but im not happy

post number 5 i have photos of a 135,000km 2.4 tdci puma engine, number 1 piston and bore.

looks like a piston cooling jet failure, the new / revised cooling jets i have got for this engine are totally different design, these were fitted to all 9A VIN onwards engines due to some issues with the early design jets latching into a no flow condition on cold start up/ high oil pressure/ flow, preventing adequate lube to the bore and piston skirt.

i'll try and take some pics of the old jets vs the new ones shortly.

Not really no.

In regards to the puma failure, first one ive come across failing and doing long sessions of 110km being the cause is VERY unlikely. Probably more likely it was just a bad egg....1 out of a thousand is pretty good going in my book.
More transits fully loaded with gear go up and down uk motorways at higher speeds ever day and don't fail. Infant I think I'm pretty safe to say more do it daily than there have been puma defenders sold in Australia.
So people do not stress or lose sleep over it!

If you were going to a remote area of South Africa you'd check any potential problems first though would you not?

what if you know nothing about mechanics and get it servied every 10k by a dealer and it was only fully serviced 1k ago.....

As far as the transits, I thought there were lots of niggling problems with the 2.4s?

And the problem can sometimes be as simple as outside temp. Wouldnt be the first time a british product, "fully desert tested" showed signs of inadequecy in other countries conditions.
