Thread: Seek advice on Defender purchase

I'm also a classic car owner and have a 2008 (Puma) 110.

It's not a 'get up and go' vehicle at all. I mean...look at it. Not exactly designed with a lap of the Nurburgring in mind.

I put in a performance intercooler and then chipped it, courtesy of Allisport and Bruce Davis Performance Landys respectively. Gets up and goes just marvellously now, with bags of torque available.

I even had a foray into the lane on the far right the other week. Splendid stuff.

Plenty of people with Puma problems here but that's what these places are for...forums are never full of "My car worked just fine today", they're full of "I have a problem, can anyone help?", so don't be dismayed.

It's a vehicle with character.

Thanks Bob, I guess most owner will flogg to have the truck chipped once the waranty is over, and smile after that's done!!

My yrs with MG have cost me 90 if not 100 trips to the garage to get her copping with today's cutthroat traffic. Now she handles everything except offroad ofcourse. I hate to let my cars stand in the garage doing nothing!

I'm the same - if I'm not offroading at the weekend and it's not raining, the Austin Healey comes out of the garage. I'm impressed that you use yours everyday though. SU carbs and regular traffic don't normally the best of friends make!

I drive my MG like a corolla.
If it's raining cats and dogs I hv the roof up, otherwise in mild rain I still have the roof down.
The SU is not a problem if one had it done up properly. But this is only one of the plenty problems., that arises, also if one does not use the car very few problems, if one uses it like I do they will surface.

I use my car in traffic jams 34deg summer will A/C on.
But most of the time I drive with roof down.

Lets not kid ourselves here, Defenders aren't 'nice' to drive in the same way as a modern Japanese car. You don't buy them because of how they drive, they have a heritage that gives them character and are completely different to anything else.
For my part I never drove a late model one before I bought mine. I bought it because they are distinctive, individual vehicles that remind me of a large mechano set. I just didnt want to buy a 'same as everyone else' type ute or car that could probably have more stuff on it for less money. I think Defenders are good for the soul!

Sooooo, exactly what kind and age of Defer are you thinking about owning? 90, 110 or 130? Tdi, Td5, Isuzu powered or the van powered newby? I'm loving the fact that you still use your classics daily! It's nice having something different. Might be wrong but I'm seeing you in a really nice Stage 1 V8 Ser 3 LWB truck cab by the picture you have painted... Still a Land Rover, the first of the plastic dash, can be made to go reasonably well and retain that great classic but 'slightly different' look.... Let us know what model you are set on and we might be able to help better with our answers... I have a 130 Crew Cab for sale, a great all rounder, but we're going back to old Land Rovers in this family!
