    Steering box problem

Hi,my 96 130 has started steering or not steering when wheel is straight, takes 1/4 turn each way before grabbing and turning, when I got someone to turn the wheel I see that the shaft going into the steering box is slipping like its not grabbing and little crunching noise, there is no leaking going on from the seals,I'm guessing I'm up for a new box and maybe shaft, what's everyone's thoughts
    Cheers mick

Do you mean the shaft/universal from the steering column is slipping on the input shaft to the steering box?

If so, you might be lucky in that the some of those shafts have an aluminium universal, and it might just be the splines flogged out in the softer aluminium bit and the steering box shaft might be OK.

Nah I think it's input shaft that enters the steering box,I think the steering column is all good but what ever that input shaft goes into seems to of had it,is that a new steering box or a replaceable part

    uni or input shaft

Hi Did you find the problem and what was it? My 98 130 has movement between the uni and the input shaft. Is it a spline fit or a keyway

    Uni or complete shaft

On trying to purchase a new uni joint for steering shaft to steering box I am informed that for Defer-130 1998 model onwards, I have to replace the whole shaft The uni joint does not appear to be Alloy, I think cast iron so am hesident to order a complete shaft with out first inspecting the input shafts splines. Any advice on the 98 as against the 96 model mentioned in this thread. Also any clues to make getting the shaft out a bit easier.

no idea on the difference between 96/98 would of though they were the same, we undid all the bolts on the unis then tapped the shafts up till the one near the steering box came out,was pretty hard to get to,had to use a long bar from under the car and held in place from up top
