Interesting as the safari snorkel is design to ram more air down into the car.
That is if you have the vent pointing forward.
Hi Everyone,
I have just had a genuine Safari Snorkel fitted to my 2013 110 Deefer. Since the snorkel has been fitted the car has done approx 200km's. The Snorkel was fitted by a large well known 4WD accessories supplier and I'm confident there is no issues with the install.
About three hours ago I was driving along the Bruce Highway and overtaking a truck in an overtaking lane. The overtaking lane was on a steep hill so some right foot peddle was applied. I was in 6th gear and the Deefer was going well. Approx half way up the hill I had sudden lose in power and the amber engine fault light came on. I immediately pulled over and popped the bonnet. My immediate thought was the turbo house but I was incorrect. I called Land Rover's Roadside Assistance and they sent out a mechanic. He plugged in his diagnostic computer and from my understanding of what he said is that the engine wasn't getting enough air and it went into limp mode. He cleared the fault and all was good again.
Being a Sunday and no dealers open I decided to continue on with my journey until it happened again. This time it was accelerating up hill from a standing start. Now I'm waiting on the side of the road till the roadside assistance shows up and I guess the Deefer will be going on the back of truck this time. Is this problem because of the snorkel? Before having it fitted I confirmed with Safari that their snorkel that they used for 2.4 is good for the 2.2.
Has anyone got any experiences or theories to share?
Regards,
Danial.

Pumas have issues with piping from snorkels to the airbox, as addressed by Nuggets upgrade.
Perhaps the snorkel itself is fine, but there's an issue in between it and the airbox?
I had my Safari snorkel fitted not long after I first bought my D90. It has done a fair bit of towing an enclosed trailer, and been put through the scenario's you describe many times with no problems. 6'th gear full throttle up a hill no problems. (No, I don't make a habit of that, but it was interesting to see how well the little 2.2 does under that type of (ab)use).
I'd suggest it's a genuine issue and LR should resolve it for you. Possibly a faulty air mass sensor or something like that. Have you checked the air filter to make sure it's not partially blocked or dirty? I found a 1/4" ratchet drive under my bonnet after the snorkel got fitted, maybe you have the fitter's rag he wiped his hands with.
Have a mate who had a snorkel on a hilux and he had problems with airflow. He found that the snorkel had a piece of course foam rubber in it apparently to keep induction noise down and keep bugs out of the air cleaner. He removed the foam and had no further problems.
Hehad all sorts of people look at it before they found the problem. It had no power and blew black smoke.
Lindsay.
Thanks guys for all your input. The Deefer is heading to the nearest dealer tomorrow. It will be interesting to see what they say when they see a brand new after market snorkel and an apparent airflow problem.
Thanks,
Danial.
