I take the point about warranty fixes and a point of diminishing returns. I personally think most warranty fixes have a % chance of being right or not breaking other things. (From personal experience and I think generally in the world that is some what true most rectifications have some risk).

A lot depends on the person fixing it. My first dealer had a 100% failure rate - 10+ visits, most of those to correct things they did not fix or broke on the prior visit. The next dealer I tried was a complete change - they were perhaps 80% successful in their fixes - until the service manager changed, then they went significantly backwards. My current and last dealer is around 90% successful and I am very happy with them, so far they have fixed everything without breaking anything else.

Our [2008 first registered 2009]130 transfer box/center diff failed again at just over 20 000KMs after warranty replacement.
The box was replaced with according to the dealer invoice with a new unit in June 2012 under warranty due to excess back lash, at the same time they replaced the rear axles & all 4 drive hubs.
We were able to drive 160Ks with the center diff locked to an RACV repairer as there are no Landrover Dealers in South West Victoria. A new box was ordered from Landrover with a 2 week delivery time then 10 days later they canceled our order stating the UK need the new units for there warranty jobs & ours would be another 6 weeks
Has anyone else had part order problems with Landrover or is the truth not being told?
The box since replaced last seemed to develope back lash which I put down to axle wear so replaced them with heavy duty units & hubs 2 weeks prior to leaving sydney for SA. After this it does not supprise me to hear they use reconditioned units for warranty.
Any ideas on what can be done to prolong the life of the transfer box eg oil cooler/higher grade oils/oil change frequency?

There's a nice change of tone.
Seeing as this thread is "Defender Puma 2.2 Problems" I'll chip in with:
The problem with my MY12 D90 is that after 25,000 kms it still doesn't have a problem. Luckily I have a S2a to keep me busy or I'd find this Land Rover owning thing boring.

The t/case is as reliable as anything in previous models so it sounds like a manufacturing issue. ie. too much backlash from new in the centre diff or a perhaps sub standard thrust washers, wrong heat treatment of gears or some such stuff up.

A lot of us install a larger sump to increase the oil capacity and help with cooling, but mine survived 308,000km without it, including being cooked when in service of the NT BFC in its first 75,000km (the fluid smelled badly burnt and was black. Off roading without locking the CDL I suspect, although driving through fires may not help)

It's probably due for a rebuild as the backlash in the centre diff is now becoming excessive and the intermediate shaft O rings are leaking but it's pretty good for the abuse its copped.

After speaking to someone more in the know than me, the Tdci lt230 has approx 400ml less oil capacity due to the angle it is mounted on. This is almost 1/5 or 20% reduction. There also may have been some reduction in quality of gear materials and machining. This based on having to repair/replace newer lt230s with km that just would not worry the older units.....

Me too apart from the radiator hose clip wearing through the hose above it and some thrust washers in the t/fer case that make a bit of a clunk when the wife drives (too quick offa da clutch). I have had no major dramas now up to 30,000ks and its only had 1 service at 20,000. Im not happy to let it go 20k between services and will book it in next week.

I have a lot of slop in the lever and it only moves a very small amount to the left to engage the centre diff lock and has slipped out while engaged a couple of times. Next service I'll get it checked. Interested to know what's actually wrong with your transfer case.
I have had the burst heater hose and coolant hose, the turbo hose also, numerous fuel issues

my clutch seems to loose adjustment also (should be getting a replacement master cylinder according to the dealer)
but the transfer level dropping out of 'CDL' then leaving me 'un locked' seems to happen every time I take the defender out. I've never mentioned it to the dealer though, thought I just must not be pushing it across far enough, is this a known issue? is there a fix?
also the excessive backlash in the rear was told 'that's just what they are like' so never had anything done about that.

    other than that happy sailing.

This is my second 130 the last one had 160K after 9 years with only a few problems [engine oil heat exchange failure was costly due to the mechanic's miss diagnossis] I like the new one but with the problems so far I'm worried.
Best part is none of my employees like driving it so I get to keep it to my self.
Im leaving in the morning heading to Vic to pick it up with a 35K second hand transfer box but will look at fitting a larger sump when I get back. Are they available off the shelf or do I need to manufacture one?

Ive only done 700kms or so on mine, and so far it hast broken down, but I am pretty dissapointed in the build quality in general. These two pics were taken while it was sitting on the showroom floor. (literally)

I expect better in a brand new "hand built" vehicle. I havent gotten a pic of the stripped posidrive bolt holding the rear seat in, (not looking forward to getting that out when I remove the seats), but these are indicative. The first is a bolt in the sill. The second is the front protection bar, which they dealer is replacing after I pointed it out.

The mud occurred sometime in the last week when 40 unexplained kms appeared on the speedo before I picked it up.

When I climbed out from under the vehicle and showed the sales guy the pics he said "well, its not like we climb around under them and look for problems".

    Maybe they should....
