    65litres -600kms. Guage on E

    Evening,

I am trying to find out how low I can run my TD5 110 Def for when I am out bush.

I have several times ran it to the E. With the red warning light having been on for about 100kms.

    I get about 65-66l to 600-620kms.

In theory this mean I should have about 10L of usable fuel left...but by this stage of gauge reading I am so concerned...read scared **** less...that I am going to run out.

What do you reckon...gauge not reading accurately or a smaller tank...like 70 litres and not 80!!!

One other quick question. The Discovery fuel tank...am I right in believing it is too wide to replace a Def tank....happen to have one sitting in the garage...

    Thanks,

    Chilly

From what I can remember, the 110Td5 has a 75L tank and the amber light comes on when there is a minimum of 8L of fuel left. That reading of course should be on level ground.

I wouldn't push it too far. I can assure you you won't get 75 ltrs out of the tank.
I ran it when light was on for just a short time thinking I'd be ok. Fortunately I erred on the side of Caution and headed for the nearest bowser.
I ran out at the petrol station.
I only got 67litres in the tank.
I've been told this is due to the pick up being positioned an inch from bottom of tank.
So you won't get 75l from your tank.

Why can't they just wack a 130l tank in it at the factory?
It's a touring vehicle not a city runabout.

Longer you run it below 1/4 the shorter the overall life of your fuel pump is going to be.

As for bigger tank. We would be almost the only users wanting more.

Mine has had 140L tank since it was a couple of weeks old - I definitely recommend it (although the bill when it's filled hurts a bit!)

    increased fuel capacity

at $0.15 Cpl discount this could be a significant saving.
I am considering some form of tank upgrade but unsure what to go for so keen to hear what others have.

Towing a van with added fuel capacity/ choice of where and when to buy sounds like a worthwhile investment to me

    cheers

I got 110kms with the light on once in an emergency, I think the light comes on at the same point in the D2, 8l.
    I think I got 90L in....

Get a jerry can full of fuel and you can find out for yourself.

I have run both a 300 tdi and Td5 out of fuel, it was easy to get the 300 Tdi started after a refill. The Td5 was a little more effort on the starter.

How long your car will go after the fuel light comes on is very dependent on the conditions you're driving in and how hard you drive it in the conditions.

On a flat made road at the speed limit you could rely on 70 km after the light comes on.

If you run the tank to nearly empty you'll be heating up your fuel pump a lot. More fuel = more heat dissipation.

Pump on bottom of plastic tank. 750 - 900km from standard 75L tank. Minimum 8L when amber light comes on. As Disco Muppet said, I also got 110L from she the amber light came on.
